Woodside
Has a cannon and looks to have desire to be on the field. Impressive.

3 tweets from Ryan.

Next season we have Woodside as well. And Julian. I'm guessing the season after that maybe not all three.

RE: Woodside
Mark and Andy named him Player of the Game.

I thought he did a real nice job given the circumstances. He preserved the W and did not turn the ball over. That's a big deal. And that 80+ yarder was electrifying.

Realistically, though, it was one game and it was an opponent we should beat. It's going to get a lot more intense from here on out. Hopefully, Logan and the team have a great week of practice. Sounds like it could be Logan's team for the foreseeable future.

RE: Woodside
I thought his performance predictable. he struggled for a while. then, started going to his strength, strong arm throws downfield, and made some plays, while the running game kept us going in the right direction.

we are certainly a less smooth and agile team at this point w woodside. owens has had some bad plays early, the offense hasn't hit it's stride, but the offense runs pretty smooth under owens. with woodside, it'll take some time to tighten up the timing. owens, is very good at throwing screen passes and woodside was not today. woodside threw several secand half darts downfield for big plays. that was exciting. he is a runner, more so than owens, maybe not as fast, but more natural.

RE: Woodside
Do we even know his "strengths" yet?

I'm glad this was on ESPN because re-watching it should be an education in what I thought I saw and what actually happened. I seem to have a different view in my head of what went on then several others.

The Woodside-Reedy 80 yd play, I think both deserve credit for that. Reedy kept the defender away and gave Woodside a good cross the field target, then turned it quickly vertical.

As far as Woodside's shorter down field throws, at least the receivers are able to hold onto them. Owens would do well to take a little gas off those throws. I only recall two screens. Two were connections and one was thrown low I think on purpose because the D had it covered. Experienced or not, his play was superior to Owens'.

RE: Woodside
I like that Woodside got a chance to play, didn't like how it happened. I think a couple penalties might have been a timing thing, but then we didn't seem to need much help on the penalties. the block in the back on McDowell's long run was ridiculous. I would prefer Owens being in there- not looking good against SEC defenses is much different than not looking good against MAC defenses, especially since the MAC of this year is not looking like the MAC of last year.

Gary Pinkle put his backup QB in for a series against Murray State and the Rockets in a planned rotation to get him game experience. His Rocket experience was a real lesson.

RE: Woodside
Hats off to this young man. Great job last night stepping up and getting us the win. There is no way to judge how he would have fared in place of TO against the SEC teams, nor is there a way to compare them going forward unless we start seeing them both take snaps against the same teams for several weeks. While he played well for us and got the job done, I saw nothing last night that says we should consider handing the reigns over to Woodside even when TO is ready to play again. He would have had to lit the place on fire for there to be any controversy. TO obviously has far more experience, so I hope he gets back soon. We need them both for the long season still ahead of us and I would like to see Logan get some playing time to keep him ready.

I was just thinking the same thing this morning. It's hard to tell for sure, but teams are certainly struggling more early than last year. Some of the lesser teams are not as weak perhaps, but there is less strength at the top it seems. Let's hope this is our chance to get back to the MACC!

I would love to see this for us as well. The backup needs to be ready. While many of us didn't like the 50/50 between TO and Dantin, we didn't miss much if one went out <ready to duck and cover>. With a few more reps for Woodside, we could have the same luxury. If TO is out for long, we should be giving Macon some reps too.

RE: Woodside
Next up, the Chimps. So far they lost to Michigan (whom Akron almost beat) 59-9.
Barely got by New Hampshire 24-21.
Lost to UNLV 31-21.

Sounds like they are vulnerable, but will be hungry for a conference win at home.
Hopefully the Rockets have a great week of practice. They have a few things to tighten up.

RE: Woodside
I think Woodside did a fine job - he didn't make any huge mistakes, made some nice throws, threw the ball away when nothing was there. As much as you can say that you prepare to go in the game at anytime, a true freshman can't really be prepared to go in unexpectedly since he had never played in a college football game before. This week he'll be able to practice with the 1st team, knowing that chances are he'll be starting. That will help him prepare better since he know that he'll (most likely) be starting.

RE: Woodside
I bet the EWU coach had no game plan to stop Woodside since there was no film on him as a collegian. CMU will be better prepared for him, but even Toledo does not yet know what he is capable of doing. The irony is that TO played consevatively v Florida and Missouri so he would not get injured. The reality is that on any snap, injuries can occur.

RE: Woodside
Any chance to get Owens back in but keep his knee rested a couple games is fine by me. Some wildcat, some Macon, heck, didn't Reedy even throw a pass or two? The second Owens takes off, I'd put him on the bench.

I liked that! Didn't try to force it if it wasn't there. I think I saw him slide once, too! Can't remember the last time I saw one of our QB's slide.

Speaking of sliding...and coaching, when you have guys like Flu, McDowell, Moore, Hunt, and even Reedy, why do you even have your #2 QB who's getting his first taste of Div I football run at all? I also wonder about that offensive series at about the 5:00 mark in the 4th that went absolutely nowhere. Seemed like a completely wasted series. I understand trying to take time off the clock, but 3 and out doesn't take much time off the clock. Why not try to get at least one first down out of it?

RE: Woodside
Why do we have a QB run? The position at the collegiate level is not designed for a strictly pure passer. Being able to run is part of every offense. Ball State's QB Keith Wenning is the closest to a pure passing QB in the MAC and he runs from time to time. That said, I was concerned when Logan turned his runs inside up field. Looked like he took a shot to his throwing shoulder and THEN he slid. I don't know how fast he is but I was looking for him to run towards the sidelines either getting out of bounds or get down.

I though Woodside played especially well. He made some good reads and throws, saw the field fairly well, went through his progressions, has a strong arm, managed the game and clock well, kept mistakes/turnovers to a minimum and is mobile enough to keep Ds honest. Practicing with the first team over the next several weeks will only make things better. Team chemistry and his timing will certainly improve. Obviously the playbook becomes somewhat abridged, but I believe we can win with him at QB. I don't believe we'll need any heroics from him at CMU to secure a win. The coaches may ask more against a tough Ball St team the following week.

And we thought Dantin-Owens was a controversy. Can you imagine next year? THREE quality QBs, the two Sophs and the transfer.
