Exclamation What the heck is this for?
I see this all the time on sidelines at football games: either a large mat w/ 11 circles, or just 11 circles. I never see any players ever acknowledge these things, but every team always has them on the sideline, right at the 50 yd line.

Our high school used them to make sure there were the right number of players going onto the field with the next unit. For example, the FG team would have one player in each circle while the offense was running it's third down play.

Its for special teams. Special team coach gathers the punt or fg team in the circles to make sure everybody is accounted for while the HC makes up his mind whether he will go for it or not.

I've never, ever seen any unit (O, D, special teams) stand on those to make sure all 11 were there.
