Boom.

Dodds previously said that he wanted the next athletic director to choose the next head football coach.

Direct Message to DeLoss Dodds: Be sure to give Mack a lifetime contract before you leave. Those poor Horns fans need some peace of mind.

"Matthew McConaughey, director of athletics" sure has a nice ring to it.

RE: DeLoss Dodds to Step Down at end of year
http://texas.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1549065

Full article.

Quote:DeLoss Dodds, who has guided the Texas athletic department for 32 years, including its growth into the top revenue producer in college athletics, will step down as athletic director by the end of the calendar year, two well-placed sources close to the situation told Orangebloods.com.

According to the sources, Dodds will move into a consulting role currently outlined in his contract and will continue to serve the Texas athletic department in "a significant half-time position."

In the consulting role, Dodds, 74, would continue to collect his full salary (currently $1.1 million) through the end of his current contract, which expires in August 2015, the sources said. Dodds would also collect a $1 million, after-taxes payment due to him in August 2014, as currently outlined in his contract, the sources said.

And it's coaching related:

Quote:But the high-ranking sources told Orangebloods.com Dodds plans to clear the way for a new athletic director by January, in part, because Dodds wants his successor to be able to make any hires that might be needed in the athletic program's biggest sports - football, basketball and baseball.

The baseball coach is near retirement and has had a couple of bad seasons on and off the field. The basketball coach has had 3 bad years and appears to be on his way out. Those two are on thinner ice than football. But I doubt anyone believes Mack Brown really plans to stay until his contract runs out in 2020.

RE: DeLoss Dodds to Step Down at end of year
This excerpt from the article has huge implications.

Quote:Sources said Dodds has recommended Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby to Texas president Bill Powers as a possible replacement. Bowlsby's current annual salary of roughly $2 million, including perks and bonuses, could be an issue for Texas regents, sources said.

Bowlsby is the former athletic director at Stanford. He hired Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw as football coaches and helped oversee raising the money necessary to endow all athletic scholarships at the school.

That is a project Texas president Bill Powers is very interested in pursuing, because it makes the athletic department completely independent of the university's General Fund and would allow UT to add more sports.

Attempts by Orangebloods.com to reach Bowlsby for comment weren't immediately successful.

Louisville
Missouri
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State

Texas
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
Baylor
TCU
Colorado
Utah
BYU

DeLoss Dodds had no vision for the good of the Big 12!

Pretty solid conference. Couple of nice cupcake teams in each division. Would've made everybody happy.

And one that looks good in hindsight but impossible to pull off in reality. Nebraska & Colorado left within days of each other.

If he loses this week - sure thing. You can probably say it on Monday, if Texas loses to Ole Miss...

Their insiders say its absolutely true. Mack won't be fired at the end of the year but will step down and retire. Take this fwiw. From Texas insider

"Bowlsby is the top target. More going on around behind the scenes in the Big 12. OU, KSU, KU and OSU all think he's too close to Texas and not aggressive enough in expansion. Wouldn't be upset if he left for Texas. Texas will make a strong push for Saban, but it will come down to 5 guys after that (right now the list is):

Shaw
Fitzgerald
Strong
Gruden
Franklin

Gary Patterson is not a candidate. Urban Myer is not a candidate. Pete Carrol is not a candidate. Chris Peterson is not a candidate. "

Expansion prior to Nebraska departing with Nebraska getting its wish of splitting the Texas schools up division wise.

West Virginia
Louisville
Missouri
Iowa State
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Texas A&M
Baylor

Texas
Texas Tech
Kansas
Kansas St
TCU
Colorado
Utah
Nebraska

That they put Franklin on their list shows they don't have a clue. Person saying this is just blowing hot air and knows nothing.

Texas would never hire anyone who embarrasses himself and his university so often. And I'm not even factoring in the rape allegations. The chances of Texas hiring Franklin are about the same as Texas hiring Barry Switzer or Matthew McConaghey.

RE: DeLoss Dodds to Step Down at end of year
The part about Dodds retiring is not unrealistic. But there's part of me that says this is just wishful thinking and targeted leaks to undermine Mack Brown by insiders who really want him out (and the timing on Friday just before the A&M/Alabama game is interesting-dual purpose?).

People who pretend to love the school have gone out of their way to undermine the program before, when Fred Akers was coach. I wouldn't rule that out here.
