They put 44K in the stands for their home opener vs. Duke. A lot more impressive than your 27K for Miami.

Kroger did provide $5 tickets to the Duke game. Still, 44k is a great number.

And free chicken ? KFC style ?

You haven't been around CUSA very long have you? Memphis has some of the worst attendance year in an year out. One game is just that. One game.

2012 attendance--

Marshall--24,896
Memphis--24,371, and ahead of Rice, Tulsa, UAB, and Tulane.

Lousy attendance I will agree, but hardly the worst.

I expect Memphis to well outdraw Marshall this year.

And it won't even be close...

In our down years, Marshall will outdraw Memphis by as much as a 5K average. We've had a string of down years, so while Herd fans have some minor right to comment, but nothing like:

"Wait memphis has fans?"
or
"You haven't been around CUSA very long have you? Memphis has some of the worst attendance year in an year out."

Those are merely overstatements for emphasis or a fan that's only familiar with the very recent history of Memphis speaking. That's unfortunate, but understandable since a Marshall fan had no reason to know anything about Tiger attendance until very recently.

During years that we're .500 or better our attendance is pretty respectable for a non-AQ FBS program as witnessed by our 2 or 3 year 40K average within the last 10 years.

I would hope in a city the size of Memphis with no pro football you'd draw 40-50k on a whim. ECU is the one that still puzzles me. How they draw that much within a small area. But I suppose they are the only NC team that actually plays football, at least in the last few years.

You're not the only one. I'm quite frankly shocked as I really didn't think they were on each other's radar, but have been proven wrong. I can't remember the last time an opposing fan base was so vocal about playing Memphis in football. I've got to say, smack talk aside, it's kind of nice to be relevant and hope it's a foreshadow of things to come.

I never have understood the "Memphis support stinks...period... no ifs, ands or buts" stance. Upon further examination, it holds no water. Having said that, I know next to nothing about most schools the Tigers play so I certainly understand how someone might throw that out there based the past couple of years.

I think this Emory study details your point quite nicely. The Memphis fanbase has been better than they would have predicted based on recent performance and has high potential for growth (ROI). BTW, Marshall is highlighted in the study as well.

Just because MT has some real back and forth with the WKU's and Memphis's of the world that actually create conversation on this board, doesn't make us 'funny'. Sorry that we actually bring some animosity towards other teams. I know the old CUSA doesn't really know anything about that.

Memphis is an in state team that I, and our fanbase, cannot stand to lose to. You're telling me your fans don't get a little more into it when you play a fellow FBS in state school?

Our Fellow in state FBS schools are currently all ACC (The Haves) twits, so we get up when playing UNC and NCSU, but not so much with Dook and Wake Forest. But once again, they are all on the radar more so than Memphis football. I could see you guys getting all crazy for Tennessee, but not Memphis football. Memphis Basketball is a whole different deal.

It's not that we get excited about Memphis. It's that we enjoy taking an in-state school to the woodshed whose fan base (inaccurately) believes that we are inferior to them.

The irony is that Memphis came into this series with the attitude that they have nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing us. God, I heard that a lot from Memphis fans. And now ironically it is us who has everything to lose. If we don't win this game people are going to say we should have and our attendance is going to take a huge nosedive. If we win it is now expected. We have been favored in every single one of these games against Memphis except the first one which we won by two touchdowns. The script has flipped, but you still have a superiority complex by some Memphis folk, although I have been pleasantly surprised by many of the Memphis fans on this board (perhaps this thread aside) who have been more reasonable at times.

Can't argue with this post although I want to note that the fanbase of Memphis thinking superior over MTSU is greatly exaggerated. It is news to me to read that as I, for one, have never thought that and no one I know personally does either.

I was hoping that the series would have provided more football recruiting exposure to the middle part of the state (losing four of five can't help). But we're now not even recruiting rural West TN that heavily right now (it would seem)? Most emphasis now is on the other side of the MS River. A big difference from the Tommy West days when the contract was signed --- he did not recruit Texas at all and seemed to want to hit the Nashville area some and heavily in Georgia.

Yet now we have in the high teens of players from Texas (second highest roster state) and don't recruit Georgia like we used to either. I've noticed that the Blue Raiders increasingly are successful in getting players from the Peach State. Wise move -- they now pay their football coaches sometimes in excess of $100,000 -- so much so that some of those from Florida have moved up there.

Here's to a safe game for both sides.

Interesting. Didn't know Memphis was hitting Texas that hard, but it kind of makes sense. You're about as close to Dallas as you are Atlanta.

I didn't either but too much time on my hands a month ago, I suppose, haha.

From the count, the highest five states on the online roster. How many of these are scholarship players, though?
1. Tennessee - 41
2. Texas - 16
3. Mississippi - 11
3. Florida - 11
5. Georgia - 8

I did not know that Kilgore was from California until this morning's CA article. Not only that, but straight from High School. It seems like most southern schools (sans the Vols obtained the Claussens and more) only grab Cali players from the Juco ranks (we have two ... but both via JCs). That was quite a coup to grab a quality QB from so far away without an intermediate stop.

http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/201...in-middle/

Greenville, NC is not next door to Texas, but I think ECU's Shane Carden is big time and he came straight from the Lone Star State.

Well, regardless of the journey, still a nice get for the Raiders.

Kilgore never started in high school. The coach's son started over him.

Tony Franklin brought Logan to MT.
