Toledo Cross Country Teams Travel to Bowling Green Friday for Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener
Courtesy: Toledo Athletics
Release: 09/12/2013

TOLEDO, OH – The University of Toledo cross country teams will travel to Bowling Green to compete in the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener on Friday, Sept. 13. The men’s 8,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the 5,000-meter women’s race at approximately 7:10 p.m.

Both the men and the women will compete against teams from BGSU, Youngstown State, Siena Heights and Eastern Michigan. The women will also take on Ball State and Miami in their race.

The men’s race is expected to be identical to the MAC Championship race, which will also be hosted at BGSU. The women will run the final 5,000 meters of the 6,000-meter race that will be held at the MAC Championships.

Toledo began its 2013 season on Aug. 30 at the Eastern Michigan Triangular. Both teams placed third and received strong performances from sophomores Theresa Warsecke (second place) and Deirdre Dwyer (seventh place) on the women’s side and sophomores Nick Costello (fourth place) and Adam Bess (ninth place) on the men’s side.

Traditionally an easy win for UT. Coaching shouldn't even be a factor with the talent available. We'll see.

I dunno...you can never count out that Siena Heights squad!

I'll admit I'm not a XC guru by any means, so can you explain this to me. It just sounds really odd as it's written. Thanks.

The Brodt race will not encompass the entire course that will be run at the MACC. The first 1,000 meters of the MACC course won't be run at the Brodt.

Okay...that makes sense. It was sounding like the women were running the end of the mens race...lol

Looks like he was listening.....
Without a front runner the A team still turned in some good times.

33 points? Not bad. I really thought Megan W would be number 2or3. Is she still nursing injuries?

No I think Megan is healthy. I think it's the coaching. Not that his coaching is wrong but Hadsell recruited front runners and from what I hear Linh is more about pack running.

Not an XC expert, but didn't we used to win this meet with our freshmen?

I think that what we are used to in terms of being national contenders may be over. This kind of stuff is good for the MAC level races. But in big meets "packs" tend to get buried. I think the new coach was handed 12-14 current women that have been All-MAC. I'm not seeing that so far.

Freahmen and sophomores in the past would dominate a meet like this.

Ok I have to say I agree with you on this. I am trying to remain positive but I get the feeling Linh new absolutely nothing about the type of runners Toledo has been made up of that made us a Nationally ranked team nor do I think he cares. All he is worried about is the Mac championship nothing on the national level.I think it is the end of an era for Toledo and with his limited ability to see past a conference title,It is also the end of us ever being nationally ranked again. Now Linh -I know you read these boards , so prove me wrong.I want to believe you are here to keep our dynasty alive and not just to punch a time clock but we expect to compete on the national level.Last night UTXC tweeted you had 7 women under 18 and my response was that's the normal for Toledo ,"Club 17"...You are riding the wave created by your predecessors so just get out of the way and let Toledo do what they know how to do WIN!! I will now get off my soapbox-Thank you.

Yes, this coach does things a bit differently than the last one did. Linh lays off the booze during practice, and he maintains professional relationships with his athletes.

Nice job last night for the women. They trounced the second best team in the MAC, and they put seven runners under 18:00. Keep up the good work.

Haha! Good one Dwight. We don't know the whole story about Coach hadsell but your well thought-out response drew a faint chuckle from the peanut gallery.
