There are players from Memphis who leave for other schools all the time without considering Memphis, in which there is no drama. There's a reason there is drama here. And it has little to do with JM. JM is the reason we know about the drama.

You cant judge plausibility off of the mother's statement, because the mother was not present during the interview. She's trying to tell you what her son said when she was not present for the interview. I might as well tell you what her son said, I wasn't there either.
