Anderson Runs for 182
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --- The Latrell Scott Era at Virginia State got off to a rousing start as senior Devonte Hunt booted a game-winning 30-yard field as time expired to lift Virginia State (1-0, 1-0) downed Fayetteville State (0-1, 0-1) before 5,371 fans at Nick Jeralds Stadium in Fayetteville, N.C.

Making the dramatics even more impressive is that the Trojans botched three extra point attempts and missed an 18-yard field goal along the way. Trailing 28-8 in the third quarter, Virginia State scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and another in the fourth to close the game to 28-26 setting up Hunt's late-game heroics.
It didn't look as if coach Scott's team would be celebrating at game's end. Fayetteville State turned a pair of Trojan turnovers into touchdowns to build a 21-8 halftime lead. The Broncos scored first after recovering a fumble at the Trojan eight-yard line with Jemeryn Jenkins scoring from eight-yards out. Fayetteville State scored again in the first quarter when quarterback Jenkins completed a 62-yard touchdown pass to Kasunn Williams.

"We didn't play very well in the first half, Scott said. "We made too many turnovers in the first half and put ourselves behind the eight-ball. We always preach to our guys to keep their heads up and not to quit. They stuck together even when we fell behind by 20 points."

Virginia State got on the board with 11:57 to go in the second quarter as Lamont Britt two-yard run for a score. The Trojan defense tackled Bronco quarterback Jenkins in the end zone to make the score, 14-8. John Brown recovered a fumble and rambled 39 yards for a Fayetteville State touchdown with 4:50 left in the half. The Brocnos led 21-8 at intermission.
Williams hauled in a 31-yard pass from Jenkins to lift the Broncos to a 28-8 advantage midway through the third quarter.
But The Trojans refused to fold. Quarterback Justin Thorpe led VSU on an 11-play, 74-yard drive culminating in Jordan Anderson's 17-yard scoring run with 2:05 left in the quarter. Anderson's eight-yard scoring run cut the deficit to 28-20 at the end of three quarters.

Anderson scored his third touchdown of the night, an eight-yard jaunt, with 6:41 to go to make the score 28-26 before Hunt's game-winning field goal.
"Our kicking game let us down. But when we needed the kick we got it," Scott said. "We tried a couple of kickers but when it came down to the end, we decided to go with our senior. Devonte came up to me at the end and said, 'Let me win the game for us.' And we did."

Anderson finished the game with 182 yards rushing on 29 totes, the most rushing yards for a Trojan in more than two seasons to go with his two TD runs. Thorpe completed 20 of 28 passes for 190 yards in the contest

I thought he went to W&M?

Running back is one of this teams strongest positions.

While I think he would of received some carries if he was still with the team, he would of possibly taken some carries away from a very promising looking freshman.

Sorry , but a redshirt proven senior taking away carries from future prospects. Should always be the other way around if the talent is there, if its not they need to be on the bench .

And if Scott has a season ending injury, hopefully he doesn't, are these FCS freshman ready to carry that load, along with adjusting to completing college classes?

He sent out a tweet that some interpreted to mean he was transferring to W&M, but was actually referring to his brother who plays for them.

I thought that the issues were about him missing too much practice due to his pre-med course of study. How is VSU's pre-med program or is he in med school currently?

Right or wrong you don't need to apologize for your opinion - but I think you are over valuing Jordan Anderson a bit. He played in 11 games and started 3 as a 4th year junior last year. In those 11 games in played he he totaled 228 years for the SEASON. Of the 11 players that carried the ball last year he averaged the worst 3.4 yards per carry.

He was not going to be a difference maker on this team. Plus we had Latney (Jr) and Scott coming back. We don't have to have 2 seniors and 1 Jr as our top three tbs.

The Freshman - Jainard Lambert ran 40 yards on 6 carries last week (6.7 yards per carry). He needs to learn to hold on to the ball, but he has more quickness than any of our other running backs. From what I see he could be a play maker this offense seriously needs. Baker, Landers, and Holoman were the last big time players makers the Dukes have had.

And Freshman play all the time. Last year's heisman was a decent freshman. We've got lot of freshman playing well for us right now. Our second leading tackler is Gage Steele and yes he's a freshman.

RE: Anderson Runs for 182
I agree that while I wish Anderson all the best, a couple big runs while he was here doesn't mean he would have changed the team. He basically had 2 big games. As for Thorpe, I actually really would like to have him on the team because even if he was backing up Birdsong, there will be a time this year where a backup QB needs to come in and win the game. For example, Thorpe came in against Maine and was really good. Wish the young guys the best, but I do wish he was on the team (with a good attitude).

RE: Anderson Runs for 182
Well barring injury, he would have been a great backup to Scott this year. An experienced back with talent. Latney is not very good. And you can rarely depend on FCS freshman.

Played in 23 games in first two seasons of action with JMU
Enters his redshirt-junior year 64 yards shy of the 1,000-yard rushing mark in his career
Had 169 carries for 858 yards and nine touchdowns as a redshirt-sophomore
Had a career-high 212 rushing yards in a 2011 game against Maine

2011: Appeared in 13 games for JMU... Ranked second on the team with 169 carries for 858 yards and nine touchdowns and added four receptions for 29 yards... Returned 13 kickoffs for 265 yards, including a long of 33 yards... Had 15 carries for 71 yards and JMU's two touchdowns in the dramatic playoff win at Eastern Kentucky in the NCAA First Round... Carried the ball 13 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns in the home victory against Richmond... Ran for a career-high 212 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries against Maine... Scored a career-high three touchdown while rushing for 85 yards on three carries against Villanova... Ran for 81 yards and a touchdown in season-finale against Massachusetts.

When he was healthy he was good. Cant harp on unhealthy season , have to look at his career as a whole. Could have been another Alvin Banks and Juice Fenner.

And we have had more playmakers than that on our team than only Baker, Landers, and Holloman

VSU lost 30-14 to some school named Benedict College who was 1-9 last year and 2-8 the year before. But they are 2-0 this year so maybe they've improved quite a bit.

Anderson had 6 carries for minus 2 yards but he did catch 2 passes for 4 yards and a TD.

Thorpe was 12-23 for 73 yards 1 TD 1 INT passing and 10 carries for 59 yards rushing.

VSU had a total of 135 yards of offense.

Is Dukeman still banking on Thorpe playing on Sundays next year?

RE: Anderson Runs for 182
Don't think that was Dukeman.

I listened to some of that game on Sirius while coming home from the game I coached. It sounded just awful. Over thrown balls, getting stuffed at the LOS and any other head shaking stuff you can come up with. Listened to the end, turned it off and had a fleeting thought- good grief, different circumstances that could be us right now.

No thanks. Glad they, and we, moved on.
