It is funny how this writer has turned the Alabama visit to College Station as an attempt to say that Saban may meet with folks in Austin about the position.

Oh good god.... 07-coffee3

It is a joke though. The writer admits it in the comments.

Of course it is, the journey in question is to College Station but lots of folks will worry across the country that the Horns will look in their direction for replacing Mack.

Even if it wasn't a joke, it wouldn't be the first time his name came up in discussions about future Texas candidates. Saban has claimed that he wanted to retire at Alabama. Many top coaches who have earned their fill are going to be cashing it in fairly soon. The trick is to get out of their investments just prior to the peak in Boomer retirement at which time payout projections will be trending significantly down and that peak will hit between 2014 and 2016. I'd say after that the bubbles will be popping in a great many things. He is a "god" to Bammers. I don't see him giving that up just to dodge cow patties when he trots onto the field at DKR.

That's one reason it's a trap to hire for a place like Texas or USC. For a job like that you need the next great coach, not someone with an impressive resume whose best years might be behind him, even though your fan base and the media blowhards are probably clamoring for the latter.

Guys they need to go after

1. James Franklin
2. Kirby Smart
3. Jim Mora Jr
4. Charlie Strong
5. Al Golden

Same goes for USC...

Coaches that are stating put no matter what...

1. Nick Saban
2. Gary Patterson
3. Chris Peterson
4. John Chavis
5. Will Muschamp

Only way Texas or USC persuades these guys is by giving them full control if the football program and a $7M+/yr contract.

Art Briles should be near the top of the list at UT. Charlie Strong wouldn't be surprising, either.

For USC:

1) Jon Gruden -- That would be a very USC hire. He'll say no, though.

2) Mora Jr. would be an interesting possibility at USC. They offered a huge contract to UCLA's baseball coach a few months after UCLA won the CWS. He stayed at UCLA, but I'm sure USC was happy they made UCLA give him a gigantic raise to stay put. USC could also do that for David Shaw at Stanford -- make them triple his salary to keep him on the Farm. Shaw would be a better choice than anyone on this list, but IMO the only place he'll go after Stanford is the NFL.

3) Steve Sarkisian -- Even though his record at UW is mixed. He'd be an easier hire for USC if he wins 9 at UW this year.

4) Jack del Rio -- Similarities to Pete Carroll's resume, plus he's a former USC star LB.

Considering what Strong gets paid in Louisville, which is significantly more than you people seem to realize, as well as the absolute control he has over the program vs. other places...he's not leaving. He said no to Tennessee, and that's a better gig than Texas.

I think it's a fair statement. Comparable money, the schedule, the "slack" he'd get there because the program has fallen as it has. It's not that UT < UTenn, but this is around the time for programs where fans, boosters, and administrators are at their worst. Strong will hired and immediately pegged to the guy they ran out, held to the positives the former coach had, conveniently forgetting the negatives.

You can still have these great programs that can't get the best of the best because they immediately make it known that coach < program. UCLA and Kentucky basketball, USC and Notre Dame football...presently expected to live up to the past for your entire future...that kind of pressure...to some, it's simply not worth it.

Strong is at Louisville for the long haul, he will retire well paid from Louisville just like Denny Crum and Rick Pitino. Charlie's current base salary is $3.7 million annually plus bonus. We can afford to match, also. 07-coffee3

Everyone better hope that Petrino doesn't end up in Austin. Because if he does. You can go ahead and pencil Texas in the playoffs every year.

Petrino might be too sleazy for UT-Austin. (Which is really saying something).

Petrino is a Moneyball type guy, Texas doesn't need that. Maybe before the motorcycle crash.

I'm thinking Texas goes all out, NFL. Jeff Fisher, Mike Smith...?

You can't match a Super Bowl ring or NFL salary. Even at the collegiate level, the "we're loaded and can match anyone" rationale can work virtually anywhere within the major conference programs, so who has it really locked down?

Strong is already over 50. He is very comfortable building His program at Louisville. He already has 39 players from Florida. More than any other school outside of the state of Florida. He and His staff cover Florida and have many connections there. Very little in Texas. I have serious doubts He would leave for Texas or USC. Florida, probably, the others, no.

The fans on one of UTs messageboards brought up a good point which would likely exclude Briles from the running. The HC at UT has to be willing to deal with the Longhorn Network responsibilities for the next 20 years on top of the regular coaching gig.

Briles is a cuddly as a cactus and is not very polished for TV.

On top of this, both Briles and Patterson have already cemented their legacies at their current positions. As long as they don't royally screw up, the jobs are theirs for as long as they want them. Briles brought Baylor back to the Top 25, gave them a Heisman winner, and has a new stadium in construction. Patterson got TCU to BCS buster status until the BigXII came knocking. The expectations in Austin are different. They demand 10 win seasons at the minimum and want to be in the National Championship hunt every year. If you can't do that, they will call for you head
