Boo, they stopped streaming the hot mike right in front of Karlsgaard and Chuck Pool! Might have learned some interesting tidbits if they hadn't cut off the stream...

I'm excited for the next couple of months, between Rice football poised for a good season and a very good 1st impression on our new AD! Liked that he was humble about Stanford's success while talking about how those same types of aspirations and values fit at Rice. Liked that he had a bit of a sense of humor (6-year-old son broke the confidentiality by telling his class on Friday, never been in Texas outside the airport).

Wow, only three questions asked of Karlgaard.

The last one dealt with conference realignment. JK said Rice belongs in a conference that shares its academic and athletic values, and where the "process" is largely the same across the schools of the conference.

I don't think such a conference exists

Yeah, I wish there were more questions. Just the Houston news media letting us all down again.

I liked what I saw and heard though.

Haha, my thought exactly. Maybe the ACC is closest? Most conferences seem to have 1 or 2 token schools with a really good academic reputation.

Doesn't help that Duarte is out-of-town and MK is off the beat.

ACC let down by academic Fraud at UNC.

Big 10?

Pac 12?

Big 12 - I don't think so

SEC - Does JFF go to any class?

Ivy League? Travel and revenues are issues.

There will need to be compromise.

Agreed. Of the FBS conferences, is he somehow trying to get us into the Big Ten? Or are we moving to the Ivy League? Or that league with U. Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Emory, NYU (that we apparently have a standing invitation to join)?

I doubt it as he said that geography is a factor. What struck me is that his comments show how out of place we are in the future CUSA conference.

Well, maybe on the bright side it demonstrates to Karlsgaard how local media attention is lacking.

I think that may have been the point - to let us know that he's not content with CUSA 3.0 without directly saying it.

I had a couple questions but figured it best to keep it zipped up because of my mixed "alumni" - "media" status. Usually I try to be the questioner of last resort, but thought it better not to be this time. O

I like that Karlgaard's tight with Bowlsby (hired him to Stanford). Whatever you think of the Big 12, he's a powerful figure on the national landscape.

RE: And the new AD is ....
I'm just delighted with both the substance of the new appointment, and the tone of the media release and press conference about it. This sure looks like the right step. It needs to be. It is the first, necessary step on a road with many steps still to make successfully. But we never get down that road without this step being executed correctly.

One caution. As much as I like the appearances here, the media release about Joe Karlgaard is similar in many respects (but not all) to the language of the media release for the appointment of the last AD.

Not surprising, but interesting just the same that Bob Bowlsby was the first mentor he thanked. If he can get Bowlsby to help guide him through the process, that will be a huge benefit.
