Most coaches anticipate down and distance and don't need to burn a time out before every seemingly important play. Terrible. Didn't they burn one before the 2 point conversion? Most coaches would have said, okay, if we score 1 to 5 minutes from now we go for two and run XX play.
They burnt one trying to go for 2 and Birdsong got sacked and didn't even get the ball off. They also burnt one before a field goal. You can't make this up. Still, I think we deserved a FG kick at the end of the game. That was beyond bush league what happened there. It was against the rules any way you slice it. It was just blatant ignorance of the rules. Yeah, you can say "It shouldn't get to that point" yada yada. What the staff did....those were mistakes. What the refs did was illegal.
Yep. I don't get burning a time out before a field goal. You get the FG team on the sidelines ready to go and think, if its longer than 4th and X we kick. As soon as the refs spot the ball you yell FIELD GOAL. How hard is it?
In addition to what you've said, sometimes its simply better to take the penalty. Sure it would have been longer, but it would have still be in his max range .

RE: Game time
I think this team projects well for conference play. It's just so painful to lose a game like that since every game is so important in college football. Secondary certainly has some question marks, and not the best coaching I've ever seen, but there's a lot of talent on this roster. If we end up 7-5 on the outside looking in, I'm going to think back to the end of this game and throw up.

All in all though I am not that down. We learned we have a qb. We learned that their is such a thing as the forward pass. We learned we have receiving weapons, which I honestly did not think we had. This game does nit make or break us. It is all about conference play. We have a lot of inexperience in the secondary obviously and for Gods sake I would live to know why we went from up tempo to checking the sideline before every snap. All in all though... that was the most exciting JMU offense in a long damn time. Plus we got a vintage Mickey meltdown:-)
I would rather have an effective offense than exciting. And most of the teams in our conference would have beat Akron. We have a history in our conference of beating lower level FBS teams.

Today's loss is disappointing because the Dukes could have won...maybe even should have won with smarter play and coaching.
That said, JMU will be fine come league play, and no one in the CAA is going to kick JMU's ass or eat us alive. That's just silly talk.
I think Villanova goes all 2009 on us.
Towson is at least 10 pts better, in my opinion.
That leaves UR and W&M who are also looking strong.
Going to be tough if we trot out the same effort/coaching as tonight.
Nova just lost to Fordham. I think we'll be ok there. But it's very possible that the last six games we play this season are total toss-ups. The CAA looks very strong this year and we've got a brutal schedule.
Do you know how good Fordham is ? Villanova kept it close with BOston college.
Fordham beat an awful URI, 51-26, and they beat Nova by a field goal. Other than that, who knows? I also don't know if BC is any good this year, but their only two wins last year were Maine and Maryland. They've already matched that, scoring 24 in both games against Nova and Wake.

I hate to be that guy to point out a box score, but it's pretty lopsided. There were a lot of weird things that happened. The fumble inside the 20 at the end of the first half hurt. The refs ruling that football games only last 59 minutes and 52 seconds....lots of stuff. The 2 big plays in the second half were awful though. When you have 3rd and 19 and 3rd and 10 and give them up, you lose.

Box score is telling.
I was an MM homer at one point guys. Hated him in 2003, loved him til UMass in 2011. The game is past him. He can't let his coaches coach.

I really think we would have blown that team out if not for Birdsong's shoulder injury. We were running a lot of misdirection and everything was open. Latney was running well. Smith, Ravenel, and Brown were killing them on crossing routes, etc. When Birdsong f'd up the shoulder, half the playbook got tossed. Can't really blame Mickey for that but I do think it hurt. As for the big plays the D gave up in the second half, I have nothing for you. The one on Reynolds was so weird as both lines thought it would be an offsides and kind of stood around. That doesn't mean he didn't get beat. The 3rd and 19 and 3rd and 10 which both resulted in TDs were just bad play.

I don't want to pile on MM. But the fact is, he is an FCS coach. Should we decide to move up, we will have to face that fact, and adjust accordingly...

He can't delegate anything except a visor to the ground. Just watch one of his PCs with Stoss. The guy is a young reporter just trying to write a story for his job and Mickey goes out of his way to try to bully him. I'm sick of his "I know more about football than you'll ever know" schtick. That's dead.

Barf. We just lost to the worst team in FBS. If you would have told me before the game our D would give up that many points I would have laughed at you. We will be fine in conference but losing tonight is sickening. That Akron team was very poor and we put ourselves in position to lose that game. Ugh!

Agree. There's just no way to spin this. Delaware, Villanova, Towson, Richmond, etc. would have crushed that team. That's what kills you is I know damn well a football game is never over in the 1st quarter but we looked physically superior and 13-0 didn't look like smoke and mirrors. Then, your team just melts and disintegrates.

Birdsongs shoulder had nothing to do with having to look to the sidelines every play. Birdsongs shoulder didnt waste timeouts, go for 2, change the tempo, or give a fumble prone freshman way too many touches again. You're correct in calling him an asshat though.

What a Sh*tty day. First UVA gets destroyed by Oregon (no surprise there). Then JMU football loses...then JMU Men's Soccer loses...then the effing Braves just lost.
I'm glad this day is almost over.
