Position Movement
from today's DNR

Quote:“That’s the way I was raised,” Matthews said. “I’ve always been a big college football historian. I read one time where the University of Oklahoma won [47 games in a row from 1953-57] — of their 22 starters … 20 of them were high school quarterbacks or tailbacks. … And we’ve always liked finding the best athletes on high school teams and teaching them how to play.”

JMU’s roster is bulging with high school quarterbacks and tailbacks, and some the Dukes’ best players are converts.

Tailback Dae’Quan Scott was prep QB, so was wide receiver DeAndre’ Smith, free safety Dean Marlowe and offensive tackle Josh Wells, who is now an NFL prospect. Middle linebacker and 2012 CAA Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Robertson was a high school running back.

No reason to keep kids in positions they wont start in. A lot of you will bemoan this movement, but its how mickey does business. Some of our most successful players have been a product of this philosophy.

The QB is generally the best athlete on HS teams. Also, with QB experience, they're already going to come with a decent amount of game smarts.

Makes sense in so many ways.

I agree. Unlike say baseball or hockey, football is much more athleticism based than skill based. Moving a guy from the outfield to second base when he's never played before can be costly and take a long time for the guy to adjust...moving a dude from WR to CB (when he likely played both in HS anyway) will be a somewhat easy transition, particuarly at the FCS level.

'95, your Avatar looks like a picture from my senior year, 1973, First year in Godwin. We had just changed from having a guy in top hat and tails as our mascot to the bulldog. I recognize the two cheerleaders. I believe the guy in the bulldog outfit might be Rich Taraboletti, not sure. What say you?

I don't know...I just like it because it's a crazy old scary Duke Dog. I got it from this article posted earlier in the week. http://misterirrelevant.com/index.php/20...mare-fuel/

"KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!" Now, that's funny stuff right there.

Maybe we should bring that particular demonic "Duke Dog" back court-side...it certainly fits in aesthetically with our new design.

Someone, 40 years from now, will say the same thing about our new basketbal court design.

RE: Position Movement
As scary and cheap as that Duke Dog head was it was a huge improvement over what we players had to endure prior to that. A guy dressed up in a Top Hat and tails and the opponents ridiculed us to death. The "new" mascot was a welcomed change.

I realize a lot of the HS QBs we bring in are of the athletic variety rather than traditional pocket passers, but I'd have figured just by virtue of the number of recruits that there would have been better play and depth at the position over the past few years. So much churn only to end up now with a true soph backed up by a true freshman. Here's to hoping Birdsong can really assert himself and lock himself in as the guy for the next few years.
