DFW Sports Day Best In Texas College Poll
Week 1 of the college football season has finished and overall, it was a good week for the state of Texas. Nine of 12 teams won their games and two who lost fell to other teams in Texas. Here is how our 10 college writers and bloggers voted in SportsDayDFW.com's Week 1 "Best in Texas" poll
1. Texas A&M
2. Texas
3. TCU
4. Baylor
5. Texas Tech
6. Houston
7. SMU
8. Rice
9. North Texas
10. UTEP
11. Texas State
12. UTSA
(I'd be OK if Rice & SMU were switched)

The only complaint you might have is being behind UTEP, it will all shake out after their game with UNM.

And behind Texas State, whom we beat last game of season. But they're a bunch of Metroplex writers, living closer to Tulsa than San Antonio, I wouldn't expect them to know anything about us...that would require them actually doing some research.

RE: DFW Sports Day Best In Texas College Poll
My Texas 12 for Week 1
1. Texas 1-0 Great backfield
2. Tex A&M 1-0 Good enough to be #1, but Manziel is a head case
3. Baylor 1-0 28 point first quarter was the best in Texas
4. TCU 0-1 They lost, but it was to LSU
5. Tex Tech 1-0 Good win over SMU
6. Houston 1-0 FCS blowout
7. Rice 0-1 Lost, but put 31 points on A&M at College Station
8. SMU 0-1 Ugly loss to Tex Tech
9. North Texas 1-0 Easy win over a bad team
10. UTSA 1-0 Good win against a bad team
11. Texas State 1-0 Took 6 turnovers to win a close game
UTEP didn't play and it isn't fair to rank a team no one has seen play.

UTEP had no mistakes this past weekend so we should be ranked #1

RE: DFW Sports Day Best In Texas College Poll
Blah, like I said on the other thread, I'm not surprised Texas State is still ahead of UTSA among public polls even though we beat them last year. It's a matter of name recognition and there are a lot of people in Texas who still don't even know UTSA has a football program. I've run across others who've heard something about it in passing but weren't sure of the validity until I confirmed it in talking to them. Not worried about it. Two years in a state where headlines are dominated by UT and A&M, with other Big 12 Texas schools in tow behind, curtails the amount of recognition UTSA can achieve in such a short period. All in due time.

No. We beat Texas State last year. Not to mention, the team we beat in Albuquerque on Saturday also beat Texas State 35-14 last year. Aside from that, Sagarin had us rated higher than UTEP, North Texas, and Texas State at season's end last year. Polls like this are just as much about name recognition and popularity as they are anything else. All said, the only thing that matters is what happens on that field, so this is much ado over nothing.

i think rice should be ahead of smu and tsu ahead of utsa...
tsu beat usm...utsa beat nmsu...it may be name recognition, but more impressive to beat usm right now...and utsa had to come from behind to win.. tsu was ahead from the beginning

Yeah, Texas State beat a team that was winless last year and rated 167 by Sagarin. I know Sagarin isn't the end-all-be-all, but it even had Southern Miss rated behind Idaho! New Mexico wasn't much to speak of either, but at least they were 145.
So what if the Bobcats were ahead from the beginning against a team that's now lost 13 straight. The only reason they even won is because Southern Miss self-destructed with 6 turnovers. The yardage was 400-215 for USM for crying out loud. Texas State couldn't do jack with the ball.
Our game actually wasn't as close as it appeared anyway. Our defense only conceded one score to UNM (their first TD was on a fumble return). We also held their RB who averaged nearly 6 yards/carry last year en route to nearly 1,500 season rushing yards, to 54 yards on 20 carries.
Like I said though, it's a popularity contest and doesn't matter.

We beat SMU by 3 TD's last year and showed up better against A&M than they did Tech and no question A&M > Tech. Head scratcher they are not further down. I think UNT = SMU..

SMU was only down by 4 to Tech after three quarters. We just got worn down. That being said, I think Rice = Tech.
I would rank them:
1. A&M
2. Texas
3. Baylor
4. TCU
5. Houston
6. Texas Tech & Rice
8. SMU
9. UNT
10. UTEP
11. Texas State
12. UTSA
(I only put the last two in that order because beating USM impresses me more than beating New Mexico...and I really didn't know where to slot UTEP in, either).

12 Texas FBS schools is pure craziness. Funny thing we could probably support Lamar and SHSU moving up too. Tons and tons of Texas talent out there.

UTaustin should be penalized 11 spots for scheduling enemasU out of their own free will. We play them because we have to.
On a side note, when UT-Austin played us in the sun bowl, they threw a fit before the game, because we were going to put Austin on the scoreboard instead of Texas
