Such a great atmosphere there. Very awesome fan base. But relatively quiet last night? I have been to several games there but it was like 6 or 7 years ago, and seemed to be pretty tame from what I remember.

6 yrs ago we had great D that would get multiple TOs. Now we are always waiting for a big play and another easily obtained 3rd and long. No D = quiet(er) fans. Still gets ultra loud when it counts at the end of close games or against big name opponents.

Exactly, great defensive play is what gets our fans going...Another reason, and this is not a slight against ODU, but the game was against ODU and they are not a team that is going to get the average fan fired up as they are not a name brand program.

I disagree. East Carolina and Appalachian State filled the stadium because the game had local interest. Old Dominion should have worked similarly.

A theory could be that ECU has three home games in a row. Fans chose.

I was just referring to the ODU fan saying the atmosphere wasn't what it used to be - as for the attendance #, I suspect Labor Day/poor performance past few seasons/ODU not a name opponent all played a factor. App is a tier above ODU in terms of history with ECU and threepeat of FCS championship. Plus, their fans align much more with our fans which makes for an interesting rivalry.

I think that's a fair assessment, but it is the opener, so I would have expected slightly better. In my opinion ECU do a fantastic job of OOC scheduling because you guys play a lot of local top teams, if ODU could schedule like you guys do (we already have NC State and VT games in the next few seasons, as well as UNC this year and of course ECU last Saturday) then I'd be very happy. It's the reality that ODU isn't a massive draw for ECU, hopefully that can change in the coming years.

Fair enough. I agree with you and your suggestion that Labor Day impacted attendance. Our local pee wee team called a game at the half because of the number of players. Too many players were not at the game.

I don't care who we would have played, outside of a team like UNC, NC State, or Va Tech it would have been tough to sell out on Labor Day weekend.

As far as App State goes, they are still a more recognizable name and we do have a history with App State in football. Like I said, I am not taking a shot at ODU, they have a fine program but from a perception stand point to the average fan you guys are still somewhat of an unknown.

I also agree with the fact that opening the season with 3 straight home games will impact attendance as well. With so many of our fans driving long distances it can be tough to do it week after week...Not the ideal schedule this year from an attendance standpoint,

I am not so sure about that unless we can not get some of the other regional teams that we play to schedule us...I suspect we would probably schedule App State or UNC-Charlotte on a regular basis before we will schedule ODU even though they are closer to us. I think for us to justify holding NC State and UNC to fire about playing us we will probably have to schedule App State and UNC Charlotte as it would be hard to pressure them using the typical arguments if we are not willing to play App State and UNC Charlotte...Those two schools moving up to FBS is going to complicate things for us from a scheduling standpoint.

Yeah six is way to early. UNT should start their games at 7:30 or maybe even 8pm. The Texas heat will kill you!

ECU will have a real blackout game for the first time Thursday night, with new black uniforms. Hopefully that helps create excitement about the game.

Another from Saturday

You'd lose fans who have young kids because the game wouldn't end till about 11 if you started that late.

The average high in Dallas for August is 96 and September it is 89, so that is not bad at all, granted you may have some out of the ordinary days that it is over 100, but odds are they will not.
