SBC Week 1 in Review
Team of the Week: Western Kentucky. Look, beating Kentucky was not incredibly surprising...but man handling Kentucky and winning by 2 scores is. Really impressed with WKU's QB play. He beat stAte last year as a backup, and looked like he picked up right where he left off. Toppers head off to the Smokey's to face Tennessee next week. Vols are better than Kentucky, but that game is certainly winnable.
Surprise Of the Week: Hey Texas State! Welcome to the league! You're now just two wins short of equaling North Texas average victory total for the last 5 years. I know it wasn't pretty at times, but I really was impressed with the defensive effort. Maybe you guys can challenge for a bowl after all.
Stat of the Week: 741: Total yards by ASU against UAPB. the ASU defense has now only allowed one touchdown total in their last three games, and two of those were legit teams. Held UAPB to 164 yards today, and could have hit 100 points had we not brought the walk-on's in for the 2nd half.
The Ugly: 1. Memo to ULL's defense...you have to stop the run to win championships.
2. South Alabama's QB juggling against Southern Utah. What on earth was that about?
3. Georgia State's special teams. 2 long returns in game 1.
4. App State's general lack of interest. I truthfully haven't seen a lot of App football over the last few years...but I couldn't tell if their players were either dis-interested, or just sleep walking in game 1 today. I understand losing to Montana, but not like that.
Burning Questions for next week:
1. Can either stAte or WKU win their games next week against mid tier SEC opposition?
2. Will Troy score 100 on Savannah State? I'm serious...
3. How many passes will Georgia Southern throw next week?
4. How will ULM rebound? Warhawks have an FCS game next week, but with Wake and Baylor looming, they must respond immediately to avoid a 1-3 start to the season.

The UAPB game has told us nothing about ASU. Auburn will be thebreal challenge.

Truthfully, I think the coaches are focusing just as much on Troy right now. I highly doubt we see the full playbook until the Trojans come to town in 12 days.
Auburn will be a test in seeing how we look against a real team.

did North Texas seriously only average 3 wins a year over the last five seasons?

Not entirely sure. I think they pulled 4 or 5 wins the last couple years, but before that was the Todd Dodge error. If they didn't average 3, it was certainly close.
I just checked. 15 wins total from 2008-2012. That is right at 3 wins average.

That was James Mauro that played against ASU last year. Brandon Doughty was the QB for WKU against Kentucky.

Well, I was close. They looked alike.

My burning question for next week is: Is South Alabama really that bad? After watching the practices and having some pretty good recruiting, I can't believe that. If we're going to pull it together, it better be next week against Tulane.

holy cow. we had four wins in our first fbs season last year without a full roster of fbs talent. no wonder north texas fans act so jealous of us. why on earth would cusa want them?

Tony Mitchell made CUSA take them. That was our working theory last year...but you'll notice no one is complaining.

You'll have to cut them some slack. There is a big difference between recruiting Denton and recruiting San Marcos. I cant imagine Denton would be an easy sell to Texas recruits.
