Two stalled drives in the 1st qtr. We should have ended up with 91 points. I'm not joking. We looked bad in the beginning. No perimeter blocking. O-line issues. F---ing kicking game. All that.

91pts damnit.

The main reason that you do not run a fake punt in that situation is simple....every opponent now will have that play on video and will practice against it.....if it is not needed do not run it.....you may need that play down the road

Did anyone notice the 70-0 Ga Tech over Elon score?

That wasn't RUTS either. Jeff Monken is a Paul Johnson disciple and that means the opponent doesn't matter. I understand how it might look to others, but these coaches are looking at the execution of their offense. Just because you're playing an inferior opponent doesn't mean you get kudos for turning a busted play into a 66 yard TD like McKinnon did last night. The question/complaint is "Why was the play busted?!" "Who made the wrong read?"; "Who missed a block?"

Ga Southern performed poorly all night. Only one of those scoring drives looked close to standard and that was with the 2nd string in the game. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and point to a 30% loss of practice time due to weather in the pre-season and to fewer reps in the base offense because of new stuff we're adding.

We have another cupcake next week and I expect a better performance.

Not ! Everyone has a fake punt play. It works when the defense isn't ready for it. By that logic, you shouldn't run any plays because teams would have video on them and practice against them.

Not if if gives you a good chance to try something in a real game situation without major consequences. Personally I think that's good coaching, Monken can't help it that Sav St. is terrible. I suppose you want to give them a trophy just for showing up. :) j/k

Funny, not even "not very good" should be used to describe SSU. I know that's being nice, but lets face it Savannah State is terrible.

Per Monken's interview (I stole this off GSUFANS)

in the press conference monken said. 1. he called the play. 2. the other coach was pissed at him about doing it. 3. he didnt care because he told his team that they wouldn't be letting up this year on anybody. 4. "i would have taken a knee; im not trying to run the score up on anybody, but they kept throwing the ball, trying to win" 5. alabama threw a touchdown on the last play against us. that didnt bother me. saban coaches his team and i coach mine. 6 We faked a punt and got a first down. that aint against the rules.

St Francis (PA) - a real juggernaut 03-zzz from the North East Conference (NEC)

I'm just glad we get another week of practice and another scrimmage because we looked like crap last night.

It's not the scoreline that I was referring to as RUTS. It is their job to stop you afterall, but running a fake punt on 4th down with the game in hand, is RUTS.

Re: Georgia Southern 77 Savannah St. 9
I guess no one has paid attention to the scores of our games over the past decade (not that I would expect you to) but thats just how Southern plays games. Our goal is to score on every drive with perfect execution. It's not like we are throwing 50 yard bombs every play in the 4th qtr. It's just our offense doing what it does. Very good run blocking and giving our guys lanes to move the ball. We had our backups in most of the game. What do you want to do? Ask the kid that never gets to play to take a knee in the 3rd qtr because the team we are playing can't tackle? Screw that. Sorry to hurt your feelings, here's your check, thanks for the 77 points, see you again in 3 years.

And as others said, the fake punk came after a SSU player kicked our backup QBs helmet off him after he tackled him. (he had to leave the game because of the helmet rule.. which i found odd because it was forced off by another player) This was when we were up big, after that coach put the pedal to the floor. He was pissed. Our 3rd string qb went in at that point and scored from 25 yards out.

Also, no one else has mentioned this yet, but SSU was down 77-9 and THEY called time out with 16 seconds left in the game so they could run another two plays. Their last pass was picked off and I REALLY wanted our guy to run it back. It was hot as heck and everyone that wasn't already in the parking lot watching the clemson game was wanting to be there (or back in the AC).

Next year when we are playing conference games, don't expect our coach to play nice and call off the dogs up 30-0. We will blow you out and we will make a statement. I'm looking at you USA and GaSt. You guys are in our back yard for recruits and we will let them know we mean business.

Flame all you want, we are who we are. It wasn't the first and it won't be the last time someone's feelings got hurt coming into Paulson Stadium.

Coaching to win matters, and I'll take our staff over anyone else. These are college students, not children. If the opponents go out there expecting us to not play 60 minutes of football and not try to score when when we possess the ball, then they have no business strapping on the helmet and pads. Every snap, they had an opportunity to stop us, we shouldn't be criticized because they didn't. Heck we had our third string in there.

Some of you should have been at or watched this game before passing judgment on how CJM handled this game. I think Southern had put in the cheeleaders to let SSU catch up they would be flamed for not finishing them off. As an exclamation point to the game experience let me share this with you. At the end of the game our players were headed over to the band/student section to do the traditional alma mater and upon realizing that SSU was about to do the same, they peeled off and ran to stand with the SSU players helmets in hand. When SSU completed theirs, they promptly all ran off the field. How classy was that?

Our team is out to totally embarrass every opponent we face, whether it be Savannah State or App State (not trying to say that will happen). That being said, we are going to score as much as possible using any means possible and if the other team has a problem with that they need to stop us.
