Week 1 TV ratings
We could list all TV ratings here for the first week of year.

@MsPotts_ESPN

Top 5 metered mkts for UNC-SC: Greenville (19.2), Bham (11.6), Charlotte (10.3), Raleigh-Durham (9.9), Greensboro (8.0), Knoxville (7.9)

@MikeHumesESPN 14m

Top 5 markets for Ole Miss-Vandy: Birmingham (13.6), Nashville (12.0), Memphis (10.7), Greenville (7.6), Knoxville (6.3)

Great start: ESPN's UNC-USC averages 2.5 overnight & Ole Miss-Vandy a 1.9, both higher than last year's Thu openers.

It will be interesting to save those numbers and compare to next year's ratings for the opening Thursday game on SEC Network between South Carolina and Texas A&M.

Hmm.. last years ESPN Thur opener of South Carolina vs Vandy drew a 2.6.

Maybe total viewers were up, as opposed to the target ratings demo.

May not have been big names and in the end that is why it would get low ratings but from what I saw of the game afterwards in highlights, that was one hell of a game too.

Great first week so far.

And Lepore also reveals NY metro ratings for college football: New York remains as apathetic to college football as ever. USC-NC: 1.1, Vandy-Ole Miss: 0.8, Rutgers-Fresno State: 0.6.

1. Only alum care about SC vs UNC in new york. What were the ratings for that game in Chicago or LA? Prob not much better.

2. The Rutgers game didn't start until 10:30pm and didn't end until after 3am on a weeknight.

I'm really not worried about Rutgers ratings this year although I do expect them to be up from last year. I am especially not worried about their ratings against Fresno State considering the time slot they played in, as you have pointed out.

The ratings numbers for Rutgers next year will be much higher in the NY area and it wont be just Rutgers fans pushing those ratings.

That could be because of more favorable time slots and opponents. Any game on ESPN or ESPN2 at noon ET on Saturday, the typical ESPN Big Ten time slot, will get better ratings in the eastern time zone than any game at 10:30 pm ET on Thursday.

But as for Rutgers' opener next year, you might get an apples-to-apples comparison with this year, because they open on the west coast again next year, vs. Washington State, likely to be another late start on ESPN2 or FS1.

Yes, but I am more interested in their Big Ten opener against Penn State.

I doubt the game will start so late on the east coast. It might also be a weekend game or Labor Day itself.

From time to time, I miss ties. This game is one that did not deserve a loser. I think ties are fine for the regular season. The conference championship games and playoffs are another matter. I think the only thing that OT has given us is an out for a coach not to make a gutsy call and a built in advantage to the team with a reliable kicker.

It will probably be a Saturday game. It's Wazzu's annual "home" game in Seattle so it's very unlikely they would agree to move it to Thursday or Monday.

As for the late game time -- still very possible. ESPN set Northwestern at Cal for this Saturday at 7:30 pm Pacific time (don't get me started on that one).

I'd call a 0.6 a good rating given the time slot and station.

Considering that it was a prime time game on a major TV network, and not cable, that's probably the most obvious statement made here recently... 07-coffee3
