Finally a stadium idea that makes sense
http://krod.com/whats-next-for-cohen-sta...opinion-2/

What should we do with Cohen Stadium?

What should we do for the one sport that has the most participation but the least representation in almost every way — a top-level team to cheer for, places to play and respect?

Turn the whole area into a first-rate soccer complex and transform Cohen into a stadium ready-made to house a Major League Soccer franchise.

RE: Finally a stadium idea that makes sense
you do know that they'd have to tear down most of the stadium and it's seating for it to be rebuilt into a soccer stadium, right? I only tell you this because I know you have a demolition phobia and I know how much you hate to spend money.

That part of the city would be an ideal location for a soccer complex to host large soccer tournaments, because it connects directly to the west side complex through trans mountain. If they would build the east side soccer complex at joe battle and montana it would be perfect for holding a huge soccer tournament as all 3 soccer complexes would be easy to get to and from.

I'm find with them spending money on changing the stadium because it isn't going to be used anyway.

As for joe battle and montana............that is where I wanted the baseball stadium to be built.

RE: Finally a stadium idea that makes sense
joe battle and montana wouldn't make sense for the stadium, it would be too far out of the way. It would make sense for the soccer complexes in regards that they would be easily accessible to parents with multiple kids amongst the soccer complexes themselves (in case they have kids playing at different complexes), but they aren't easily accessible to the population of the city. In order to get to the west side soccer complex from the heart of the west side, it is a 20 minute drive up I-10 to transmountain. Considering traffic, it's a longer drive from the heart of east side El Paso to Joe Battle and Montana.

Your argument about tearing down cohen in order to rebuild it into a soccer stadium refutes all your arguments about not building a baseball stadium. Lets be honest, in theory, converting cohen to a mls stadium would seem like a good idea, but a lot of people don't want to go to the north east, that's what killed cohen in the first place.

A twenty minute drive isn't a long drive and shouldn't discourage anyone from going to see a baseball game.

If that is the case, then downtown presents the same problem for east siders because it takes 20 min. to drive down town.

By your logic, the new baseball stadium has just alienated the fastest and most populated area of the city.

fitbud, you're proving my point. The baseball stadium will be 20 minutes from the furthest destinations in El Paso regardless of where you live in El Paso. If you put the stadium near joe battle and montana, it is already sort of out of the way for some east siders. Imagine how out of the way it would be for the rest of the city.

Back on topic, cohen being converted into a soccer stadium is good in theory, but imagine how much complaining is going to come from the naysayers when you tell them that at least half of cohen will have to be demolished and built up again in order for it to accommodate a soccer field.

RE: Finally a stadium idea that makes sense
I live near Hanks High school. It literally, factually, takes me 20 minutes to get to Joe Battle and Montana. I can get to downtown within 25 minutes. I point this out because my neighborhood is one of the few that doesn't have a quick artery to a highway. If it takes me 20 mins to get to Joe Battle and Montana, how long would it take for a family in the upper valley? Other than the bassett place (which is where an arena was going to be built), downtown is where the stadium needs to be.

I disagree. Once the loop is completed, a stadium on Joe Battle Montana would be accessible from any part of the city within 20 min.

As for Cohen. Yes, people would complain about having to rebuild it suit soccer but come on.

It's not like we are asking them to tear down a building like City Hall that was already paid for and still in use.

RE: Finally a stadium idea that makes sense
incorrect, according to google maps from my location (sunland park mall area) to joe battle and montana it is 39 miles through the loop. Drive time would be 56 minutes by way of the loop assuming no traffic nor traffic lights. Not taking the loop the distance is almost 30 miles, drive time is 41 minutes with no traffic nor traffic lights. If you figure in traffic, my best bet is to probably take the loop to avoid congestion on the east side. With light traffic, it will take me over an hour to reach the stadium through the loop. I don't even want to think what it would take going down I-10 if games start around 6PM during the week. It is going to take me an hour just to get to the spaghetti bowl, another hour to reach an exit on the east side and then the drive up towards the stadium.

What part of " anywhere in the city" don't you understand?

Sunland park is in the next state.

Sunland Park is in New Mexico "Sunland Park Area" depends on what side of the freeway you live on.

Besides. I calculated the miles from Sunland Park Casino to the intersection of Loop 375 and Montana and the milage came out to 22.2 miles.

Someone isn't telling the truth.

RE: Finally a stadium idea that makes sense
"sunland park MALL" I can see where your aggie education has failed you..... Just so you know, from sunland park MALL (directly off I-10) to the west side soccer complex is 8.8 miles.... There is 7 miles of I-10 in that route, not including the entrance nor exit on I-10. West side soccer complex to cohen stadium is 12.1 miles of which 11 miles is transmountain, not including entrance nor exits. Cohen stadium to the intersection of Montana and joe battle is 14.2 miles, 12.2 miles of that is the loop, not including entrance nor exit, nor 2 miles of road that is Woodrow Bean ( transmountain and I-10 intersection to Purple Heart Highway)... That is over 30 miles of highway alone!

Just to make you look even more stupid, there is over 20 miles of I-10 alone from the sunland park on ramp to the joe battle exit...

You tell me who isn't telling the truth, dumb aggie twerp

Randaddy clearly and specifically says 'Sunland Park Mall Area.'

Fitbud replies about Sunland Park and Sunland Park area and then makes calculations from a casino.

Par for the course.

Google maps clearly shows the distance being 22.2 miles.

Even if you took I-10 and doubled back to Spur 601, it comes in at less than 30 miles.

There is no need to go through Transmountain.

In the city; outside the city
Take the loop; don't take the loop
Within 20 minutes; less than 30 miles

Fit, you are so clueless that you argue with yourself most of the time. Might I suggest you read each thread in its entirety before each post.

Yes, yes, I know, you wont apologize for your opinion on the best route and/or starting point.

Okay, I'll play fitbud's game.

1. Who said anything about Sunland Park Casino?

2. Regarding Sunland Park Casino, it is close to large arteries and very close to 1-10. That is a horrible example.

3. Again, who said anything about Sunland Park Casino. The area in question was Sunland Park Mall.
