Our defense was better. Don't be deceived by the passing totals, that was the gameplan. We conceded everything in the middle of the field and attempted to get them in some 3rd and longs and just failed to make enough of those plays. Two of those 3rd and 7's, we had Carden dead and he made the play and scored.

Also, the fumble and special teams killed us. What was our average starting field position? The 18 yard line? There's was much better, especially after two horrendous punts in a row.

The defense had issues but for the most part they were executing a gameplan and I have no problem with that.

If you read their thread on the 247 board......ECU sucks and they stomped us so it will be a cake walk for MD

Hey all, I apologize for blowing this thread up as a Pirate.

I just got really addicted to visiting ODU's forums and stalking it all in anticipation for ECU opener against The Monarchs. I really enjoyed the game against your team, and now I guess I will not have much chances to communicate on the forums with such a postive and uplifting fan base and not to mention ACTIVE on the boards.. It really helps me pass the time in a good fashion catching up on the bright futures of UNCC and ODU.

Now I would have to argue that East Carolina does not suck, and neither does ODU. It was a competitive game Saturday and the better team won. I honestly mean that, and that Rowdy Dowdy wasn't that Rowdy. It was too quiet for my liking.

I lost my voice and I feel like a train hit me because I cheered so loud (Section 219), But up until the First few minutes of the 4th quarter, it was truly anybody's game, and I was quiet too at many moments. I thought it was going to go into OT there at some point, untill we came ahead by 2 tds.

With all that said, I sort of want to come to that game, as ECU does not play on Sat. I may wear my purple and gold, just to see all the all girls school of Maryland be like "what the.. why the pirate?"

I hope you all win, though. I will miss the Monarchs boards, and hope to play you guys again soon. Your QB is totally going into NFL if he has those aspirations.

I did some research and believe if ODU plays the same scheme defensively that we will win on Saturday.

LOL Yes I know cornbread, you are off the hook. The four ECU fans turned out to be pretty cool. After my 60 yo sister took the one in front of her to the woodshed they were fine and she ended up sitting with two of them the second half.
Overall ECU fans are First Class, they do not belong in the same sentence with VCU trash.

I found it hard not to hate ECU fans because the E-C-U chant sounds nearly identical to V-C-U!

I watched a little of the Maryland replay. They are going to be a handful for us. They ran a lot of read option and misdirection, and we all know how that tends to work out for our defense. I initially thought they would be the best hope (besides Idaho) for a win. I have to admit, now I am just hoping not to get blown out next week. Pitt, on the other hand looks like a better match up for us now that I am watching them.

Yes on Pitt. We will be a let down game for them sandwiched b/t road games at Va Tech and at Navy and we will be the fastest offense they would have seen to date.

There aren't 165 teams in FBS...

I'm excited to see how we stack up against an acc team.

Period. Whatever the result, just getting a baseline against an acc team lets us know where we need to be.

Razor is right---this season is all about finding out where we are in relation to these teams. Especially squads like ECU and Maryland and even UNC--these are teams we will be recruiting against. Wins would be nice of course, but playing these teams well now is still a recruiting bonus. You go into these living rooms and tell these kids that they are the missing link.

After watching our first FBS game, I would suggest that, as of right now, we are a middle-of-the-pack CUSA squad (at worst). With some more experience and another year of recruiting, conditioning, etc., there is not reason why we cannot contend for the title next season.

We'll find out more as the season progresses.

We seriously had an opportunity for victory vs ECU.

Take away that TH shank punt, add a short pass 1st down instead of the 3rd-and-bomb incomplete, add a little luck like recovering the end zone fumble, and we could realistically have won.

The stats were remarkably close.

In any event, we acquitted ourselves extremely well.

I think we will get a much better idea of where we stand after this week.
Defense
In Maryland we face a more conventional offense that is run/pass balanced and seems to be efficient and effective. (not completely sure because of the opponent last week).

Offense
I believe that we move the ball against anyone, but again The Terp defense is more conventional and balanced and seems to be effective. (again not sure because of FIU)

In any event, UMD plays what would be considered standard college offense and defense; schemes we are likely to see most often.
