Former University of Cincinnati basketball player Art Long has been charged with gun and drug crimes and connected to a drug operation that Rochester police said has been the cause of violence in the city for months.
Long, 40, who attended UC prior to several years in the National Basketball Association, was arrested following a search of his Chili home on July 18. He was charged with third degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of marijuana.
Chief James Sheppard announced the arrest of Long and others during a press conference Monday that was called also to discuss two separate weekend shooting events in the Plymouth Avenue and Exchange Street area where the alleged drug ring has been operating over the past several months.
Sheppard said the shootings have not been connected to each other, or to the drug operation to which Long and the others arrested have been linked.
Those shootings have also not been connected to other violence in the Plymouth Avenue and Exchange Street area, including the shooting death of Willie Little, 59, on Aug. 18 on Plymouth Avenue; or the nearby shooting of three people later that night on Jefferson Avenue.
“At this point in time we do not know (of any connections),” Sheppard said. “What we do know is that we’ve had a significant amount of violent events in the Plymouth Avenue area, as a result of some of those incidents in which shots were fired and in some no one was actually hit, our investigations were initiated and these (arrests) were the results of those investigations.”
Sheppard said police had been conducting an “extended investigation” for the past five weeks that resulted in numerous arrests and numerous seizures of weapons.
On Monday, he displayed a variety of what he called “assault weapons” that he said were seized during the execution of search warrants at least three locations, including Long’s home at 35 Chi-Mar Drive in Chili:
• On July 18, a search warrant was executed at Long’s home and discovered there were a .45 caliber handgun that had been reported stolen, and a WASR 7.62 rifle.
• On July 26, a search warrant was executed at 66 Cottage St, the home of Korey and Brian Weaver, and a black 7.62 rifle and WASR 7.62 rifle were located. The two men were charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
• During a third search warrant, executed at 67 Warehouse St. which is a storage facility owned by Dominic Nicholson, a 12-gauge pump shotgun and a Crossman .22 caliber rifle were discovered. Nicholson, 24, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and fifth-degree marijuana possession.
“We do believe that that was an organized group in that PLEX area, and our investigation is continuing,” Sheppard said. “We believe that they were organized in terms of drug sales.”
Sheppard said the arrests made a dent in the drug operation, but “we still have some issues that we have to address because ... we’ve continued to have violent events in the area.”
Long played for a number of NBA teams between about 1999 and 2004. Attempts to reach Long were unsuccessful.
