Wonder what he did to get suspended for half a game? And is that 2 consecutive quarters? Or could he sit out the first and third? Or maybe a quarter against us and one against Sam.
Seems bogus and self- serving at best for the Ags attempt at team discipline.

My feelings, exactly.

Misdemeanor assault.

News article on Gaines' suspension
Quote:"Phillip is out for one game," Bailiff said. "We have high expectations here, especially for our captains. He’s going to travel with us but that’s a decision understands."

RE: Phillip Gaines to be held out of A&M game
Raven out for one game. Everett out for half-game, but he has a broken thumb, so will probably miss the whole game, anyway. Those two got in some kind of altercation with some frat guys in the parking lot at an apartment complex. I think there was some alcohol involved in this one.

Ennis is also suspended. Something about discharging a firearm. Not pointed at anybody, but into the air. Who knows what he was thinking. Maybe celebrating an Afghan wedding...

So there's three starters on defense that couldn't stay off the police blotter, who y'all don't have to be concerned about.

Bailiff took a bit of a swipe at Sumlin in regard to just this thing....

In regard to picking a meaningless game to suspend a player for as opposed to a high profile game, Duarte quotes Bailiff: "Rice coach David Bailiff on decision to suspend CB Phillip Gaines for A&M instead of another game. Thats not how my momma raised me" ....

If he weren't injured, he'd have sat out the offensive plays.

A half-game suspension? I didn't know there was such a thing. It seems ... weak.

It is the bare minimum punishment that shows aTm is not going to let it completely slide, but the handed out punishment will also be more decorative than punitive.

As you put it, weak.

The weakest I've seen is one in which the kid wouldn't start. he missed only the first play.

I think you tend to see that more in basketball.

I thought the "suspended for the Louisiana Tech game" last year was pretty darn weak too.

Knowing what we know about Gaines, I find it pretty unlikely he was doing what the A&M guys were doing (fighting frat boys or waiving a gun around). Hoping for his sake that it was something less important, like being late to team meetings a few times or something.

Wow. That must really show them! 03-banghead

Not sure what rule was violated, but really glad that Bailiff is taking a strong stand. I am sure Gaines will learn from this as well; hoping this doesn't hurt his draft stock or his future career though.

I agree. I am confident it is something far less serious. I get the feeling that an aTm type charge would get someone kicked off the team for good at Rice.
