“War Against Boys” In Public Schools
Are American boys getting the short end of the stick in school? Christina Hoff Sommers, author of the New York Times bestseller The War Against Boys, has written a provocative opinion piece for Time Magazine arguing that our public schools have become a hostile environment for the boys in their care.

The term "War" in this context is needlessly dramatic and overblown. Yes, the public schools are -- in the mass-absence of fathers at home -- molding young boys to become dysfunctional and incompetent adults. No, it's not going to change anytime soon.

This has been talked about for over a decade. It was a topic even when I was still teaching. What it involves is primarily female teachers trying to mold boys into little girls, punishing what is normal little boy behavior as if it was abnormal.
I'd actually be OK with a school that segregated boys and girls into same gender classrooms.

Maybe in elementary school, but I'd rather my son have a chick in a short cheerleader uniform to look at when he gets his uncontrollable erections every 15 minutes during puberty.

There's a lot of evidence that shows it has merit in math and science classes.

The end result is an extremely lopsided ratio at the college level. What's that ratio right now? 65%-35% female-to-male?
If those numbers were reversed, the media would be apoplectic.

I agree "war" ia the wrong term but don't think that the problem with boys stops at the home. Schools are trying to teach boys and girls the same way, when boys and girls are very different creatures.

The most recent national #s I've seen float between 55-45 and 60-40. Of course there is a lot of variance among schools.
I've heard from a very reliable source that Davidson University in N.C. is now giving affirmative-action preference to male applicants. I've heard -- less reliably but I'm inclined to believe it -- that William & Mary is doing this, too. Fascinating how that worm has turned in less than 40 years. It won't be enough, though. The great crisis brought about by the spread of "non-traditional" families, absentee-fathers and the triumph of dysfunctional, ideologically-based education theories in the public schools will combine to make it more and more difficult for colleges to find male applicants who are capable of doing college-level work. So either the ratios really will reach 65/35 (or more?) in another decade or two, or else the entire definition of "college-level work" will have to be redefined. Perhaps a combination of both.

I don't think it stops at home, either. But if the problems at home were not so profound, boys would be more able to overcome the bullsh*t being spewed at them in the public schools.

True.

Excellent point about the kids in 2 parent families (mother and father at home) being able to overcome the bullsh*t being spewed to them at school. Now that I think about it, every single person who is in town doing well and of regular intelligence had two heterosexual parents.

Well obviously you are speaking in the broadest possible terms, but yeah I think there is some truth in that.
