RE: ....and now, a message from the President (Brad Martin)
I'm concerned there is a lack of any reference, besides Education, to innovation and entrepreneurialism. Hopefully the powers recognize the imperative that the U of M become a leader in innovation creation in the nation, and they are holding it . . . close to the vest? Without innovation stemming from our students and faculty, without U of M alums creating small and large vibrant, investment-attracting companies, the region will stagnate. The greatest talent from the region will migrate away, and feed other cities' economies.

The U of M cannot let that happen. The City and Region cannot let that happen.

That said, Martin has a resume for developing excellence in that regard, if it becomes a priority. And the guy has the gravitas for the position of University Pres.

Just to add on to what you've stated, the University has a new department now, due to the donation from Hilliard and Harriet Crews ($1 million) to house a entrepreneurship and business innovation lab to foster new ideas in business. They are in the process of renovating the old Masonic Building on Walker near Patterson.

Is there a formal forum for alums that own a high tech company to pursue either a) angel investors or b) small cap VC funding. If so, please send me a PM as I know of two such companies led by UofM alumni seeking capital ~200K. Very innovative.

Rule of thumb. You don't announce a capital campaign unless you have 60% or more of the funds committed. We just finished a $250,000,000 campaign so for us, following this closely with a new plan including the $40 million is a big deal.

RE: ....and now, a message from the President (Brad Martin)
I am really thrilled with this visionary plan put forth by Mr. Martin, and especially the emphasis on input from the community. What a change in tone!

He is addressing the twin engines that feed everything, student enrollment and our relations with the BOR. Both have needed focus and attention for years. We are bleeding hundreds of students who leave home to go to school in Middle Tennessee, where MTSU is the "cool thing." Obviously, they are doing things to attract our students in Memphis, and we could benefit from studying what they are doing.

And secondly, he is turning his attention to retaining the students we enroll. I have been complaining on this board for several years about the very weak academic counseling available for non-traditional students. My friend who is a mid-life student who attends classes at night continues to flounder in progressing toward graduation.
This is her 4th year, and she just attained Junior status, and has run out of financial aid. She has received very little and very weak advising, and not much encouragement to seek it or have it mandated. I have been chatised on this board for my comments on this issue, but apparently Mr. Martin sees a need to focus on this critical area, and I am very pleased.

The emphasis on collaboration with local corporations is also spot-on, IMHO, because it is a recognition of the character of the U of M, being an urban, commuter school with lots of non-traditional and older students. This is an acceptance of our unique character and a determination to build on our strength, which is access to major corporations in this city.

I find the vision of producing more teachers in a world-class Education Department both worthy and bold. Peabody College at Vanderbilt has been the best teachers' college in the nation for decades, and the U of M could certainly learn a lot from them just up the road.

And of course, I am overjoyed to see a $40,000 athletic campaign with a major donor already on board.

I do so hope Mr. Martin is chosen as the permanent President and that he accepts the position.

As your president of the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences Alumni Chapter I am proud and happy to report earned attention from President Martin.

The founding program of The University of Memphis, the College dates back to 1912, when West Tennessee State Normal School first opened its doors to students.

The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences is composed of 4 academic departments - Counseling, Educational Psychology, & Research, Health & Sport Sciences, Instruction & Curriculum Leadership, and Leadership - that offer 57 degree-programs.

3,131 students are enrolled in the College for the 2011-12 school year, including 1,921 undergraduate and 1,210 graduate students.

In 2010-11, the College awarded 369 bachelors, 326 masters and specialist degrees, 32 doctorates. The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences awards more graduate degrees than any other college at the U of M.

The College is home to 11 nationally recognized teacher education programs, more than any other institution in the Tennessee Board of Regents and the University of Tennessee Systems, including the only nationally-recognized Educational Leadership Building, Mathematics Secondary MAT, Physical Education, Reading Education MS, and School Library/Media Specialist programs in the state.

Our rehabilitation counseling program ranks among the top 15 programs of its kind nationally, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Our educational psychology program ranks among the top 10 in the U.S. in terms of faculty scholarly productivity, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences awarded more than $60,000 in scholarships to undergraduate and graduates students for the 2011-12 school year.

The College is home to the Center for Research in Educational Policy, one of just 26 academic centers in the state designated a Center of Excellence by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

The College ranks among the top colleges nationally in awarding baccalaureate degrees in education to minorities.

I doubt even Penny has the level of wealth to make a staggering $30M donation. Remember his peak earning years are behind him and his considerate earnings were significantly trimmed by taxes, agent(s) fees, accountants, lawyers, etc.

Tiger fans of lesser means owe a debt of gratitude to the donor upon his or her identification.
