It is a courtesy for fans, especially those watching on TV. I think it does zero for the team to not have them. Just an empty gesture.

The last time we didn't have jersey names was Chaump in 86-89, I believe.

I think TECH is going with Bulldogs on the jersey back, at least that's what the schedule poster shows. The names will probably come on for the bowl.

Agreed. Unless if you have a program, it's hard to tell who is who. The rare exceptions are those who are definitely well-known.
