Miami, BG, NIU, and Toledo are the TOP tier of MAC football by almost every metric, current and historical. Ohio sucks at football.
Historical is a metric that doesn't mean anything. Rice used to average 70,000 a game back in the 50's. Where does that get Rice today?
Northern Illinois is the flagship program of the MAC. They have all the elements a MAC school is looking for.
-Has 3 straight MAC West titles (2 straight MACCs)
-Hosts regular season game annually at Solider Field
-Has new IPF and relatively new Yordon Center
-Made the Orange Bowl in 2012
-Averaged 20,000 last year.
-28,000 seat stadium, all on the sidelines
I don't see how one can say that Miami or BG are Top Tier MAC programs
-Both have 23k-24k capacity among the smaller of the MAC.
-Attendance is barely above the 15,000 minimum
-Only 1 MAC Champ between both schools since 2004.
-Since 2006 BG has made 3 bowls, Miami 1.....Ohio has 5.
They sound more like mid tier MAC programs to me, looking from the outside. Ohio is stronger with 22k attendance average and 2 straight bowl wins. Ohio also has the highest paid and longest tenured coaching staff in the MAC.
The Bobcats have gone 9-1 in their last 10 non-conference games. The only loss is by 12 to Rutgers in 2011.
