2012 NIU vs. 2009 CMU
Thought I would do a fun thread here. I expect reasonable responses, as I will try to not be a homer. Let's have a friendly MAC matchup between the top 2 MAC teams in the last 10 years or so. Outside of Miami in 2003.

2009 CMU
Resume:
12-2, finished the season ranked #23, GMAC bowl Champs.
Losses(2):
19-6 Arizona who finished 8-5, 2nd in PAC10.
31-10 Boston College who finished 5th in ACC. (Note: LeFevour had migraines and did not play 4th quarter, Antonio Brown didn't play most of the game). Would have lost regardless though.
Wins(12):
48-0 Alcorn State
29-27 MSU, finished 6-7.
44-41 Troy, finished 9-4 Sun Belt Champs.
9-0 against the MAC (including MACCG), essentially dominated everyone outside of Buffalo for some reason, won 20-13 in a slopfest.

We had 14 guys from that team to go on to be on NFL rosters or practice squads. 5 wins over bowl teams.

2012 NIU
Resume
12-2, finished ranked #22, at one point #15, BCS appearance.
Losses
18-17 Iowa who finished 4-8
31-10 FSU who finished 12-2 ranked #8.
Wins:
35-7 Tenn-Martin
30-23 Kansas who finished 1-11
41-40 Army who finished 2-10
9-0 in MAC play (including MACCG), dominated many MAC teams but had close games with BSU, KENT, and UT.

4 wins over bowl teams and first MAC team EVER in a BCS game.

Flipping the schedules, I'll say CMU goes 13-1 because if the 2012 team beats Iowa, the 2009 sure as hell does. Get throttled against FSU worse than NIU did though. Tough game against Army but our defense was pretty good. NIU goes 11-3 or 12-2 with our schedule. Doubt they beat AZ or BC, but the MSU game could be a toss up. However, LeFevour was slinging the ball all day and I'm not sure Lynch can do that, better runner though.

Head to head, it's tough. Our offense in 2009 was sick. Our defense was solid too. I think this is a game in the 30's and could go either way. CMU nicks it in a close one but that could be the maroon/gold in me talking. Thoughts?

Wow, a hypothetical situation and I get crucified, while other threads are discussing how warm weather will affect the game vs Iowa. Pleasant welcome to the board I see.

Have a great season and maybe you can actually beat a 4-8 Iowa team this year.

Both teams were good but other than that, we'll never know.

Please don't take him seriously, George. There are some "different" people on this board. Your posts are intelligent, positive, and most welcome here. Please keep posting.

But also keep in mind that MD is a meteorologist, so it's natural he would bring that up. And it's a good point. Though he has to admit that we don't know with any high probability what the weather will be 10 days from now.

2012 NIU in a slight edge just because of the defensive backfield.

Thought I might take a hit on that one, thanks though NIU007!

MD is up there with the best prognosticators. But, as far as early predictions, he is NOT a premature prognosticator! And when he has to do it, he doesn't enjoy it (much)! 03-wink

No problem, I really hope it does hit at least 90 to save some face now.

I hope it's not 90. 70 and sunny would be perfect.

George, thank you for the kind words. I can tell that you have made it far in the business world, you are sage and have a keen sense of humor. Go Chips, beat Toledo!

RE: 2012 NIU vs. 2009 CMU
I think this is an awesome comparison. It's hard to compare against schedules though, because I know nothing of the strengths and weaknesses of AZ and BC in 2009. I think 2009 CMU and 2012 NIU playing each other would be interesting. I'd take my Huskies though, I think the MAC was a little better this year than in 2009. And as good as Dan L. was for CMU anytime Lynch is behind center I feel confident in my Huskies, it would be a shootout for sure.

Sorry to be that guy, but NIU lost to Miami that year in the MACCG. What makes you think they would've taken care of the stacked 2009 CMU squad?

I can live with people thinking the 2012 NIU team wins it, but idk about the 2010. Then again, I didn't watch a ton of NIU football that year. Do remember them hammering EMU by like 60 points.

They hammered every team in conference play. I won't make excuses for what happened in the MACC but they were a better team than Miami, some fluky stuff happened in that game. There closest game was against WMU on the road they won by 7. Here is how they faired in conference.

50-14 at Akron
31-17 at home vs Temple
45-14 against Buffalo at home
33-7 at home vs CMU
28-21 at WMU
65-30 against Toledo
59-21 at Ball
71-3 at EMU

Losses to Iowa St, bowl bound Illinois and Miami.
Smoked Fresno in the bowl

They did have a pretty impressive season, but my point was they didn't even win the MAC. I know it hurts to rub that in because NIU was the better team. Miami was not good that year. I don't care what their record was, they won so many close games and would've been hammered by over half of FBS.

NIU was definitely a good team, I think there can be an argument between 2010 and 2011 NIU, but I think CMU prevails over both. Like I said, would be very close with the 2012 squad.

Also, this goes against my argument, but I remember something along the lines of Harnish not being the starter in 2010? Wasn't it a basketball player who started the first few games for NIU?

Ya, I wasn't agreeing with YesMan, just giving you the facts. Yes, Harnish didn't start the first game, DeMarcus Grady did. He was awful, he was our 3rd string QB.
