As a coach I want as many home games as I can possibly get. For a number of very good reasons. Home court advantage (increases chances of winning), Less time out of the classroom for my players, Branding (more opportunities to showcase the players and team), improve my CAA tournament seed, improved interaction between players and student body, reward season ticket holders with more games.

I get really perturbed when we start talking about being better next year. Bull Crap! Be good this year. You are either good now or you will never be good. The things we plant in these kids heads is stunning. It is like when my daughter was a little girl. Whenever she would go to town with her mother or grandmother she would get car sick. Because they talked her into it. She never once got car sick with me because I never put it into her head. Keep telling our players that they are a year away from being good. They won't disappoint you.

So I guess you would never redshirt a player then?

It would have to be an extremely rare case for me to redshirt a kid in basketball.

I would say we under-recruited if we need to redshirt a kid. It hasn't worked out for JMU so far, red-shirting.

Didn't Diouf redshirt? By & large, I agree with you. But, if my memory of him redshirting is right, he got significantly bigger for that final year.

Hmmm, guess I'm mixing up his years. Maybe he was supposed to redshirt, but played in games after we got thin? Thought I remembered something about Diouf redshirting.

They kept saying for three years that they wanted to redshirt him, but never did. He was only 17 when he came to Madison.

RE: Out of Conference Hoops Schedule...
Why are we starting a series with Big South teams Winthrop and High Point instead of scheduling annual games against our traditional rivals George Mason, ODU, or VCU?

Brian Frerking will have an impossible job raising funds for a new basketball area. Last year including the home games with Richmond, ODU, and George Mason, JMU only averaged 3,300 fans in the 7,100 seat convo. With Winthrop, Elon, and High Point highlighting 2014 season, it would be more practical to restore Keezle to the 1970 standard. We all would enjoy sitting up on the running track bragging about selling out the arena.

Seriously, it is time someone with marketing skills take over the scheduling of men’s basketball.

RE: Out of Conference Hoops Schedule...
I agree 100%- even Selig's article that this years team will take its lumps I don't agree with- maybe I'm drinking the purple koolaid but I think this years team will be better than last year (the only small doubt I have is how good Curry will be leading the team at the point but I have a feeling he is really going to step up) and the program as a whole is on the upswing. Maybe Brady and Co are trying to fly under the radar with the comments that they are making but I don't like the built in excuse of a rebuilding year or that the team is young- we are building and in looking at the schedule there isn't a game on there that JMU doesn't have a chance to win. Youth should really not play a factor- maybe lack of size would but you could argue the size with contributions from 1 or 2 freshmen bigs is better than last year and defense and scoring on the wings can match anyone we are playing. If Semenov can stay healthy outside shooting will be strong.

I'm just a little disappointed they didn't schedule tougher out of conference opponents- home or away doesn't really matter but if the program is going to continue to improve you can't wait for the stars to allign to start scheduling stronger out of conference- load up because in the not so distant future you may need quality out of conference opportunities for rpi/post season at large consideration. Think big!

RE: Out of Conference Hoops Schedule...
Yeah, UVA just released their schedule for this year...17 home games. It may seem counter intuitive, but building a new stadium will bring more interest, not only from the fans (as people have discussed we aren't even filling half of the convo's capacity right now) but also from other teams. UVA's JPJ is one of the nicest facilities in the nation...schools want to play there. I know JMU has put a new facility in their preliminary budget. I still hope they are considering it. I love men's hoops, and I know the convo has it's history. But I'm sorry, it's kind of a dump.

RE: Out of Conference Hoops Schedule...
I would imagine it will be tougher for season ticket sales this year. A weak home slate and only 10 games at that. But if this is the price we pay for getting a good home schedule next year I can live w/ it. This is a rebuilding year of sorts and we'll be trying out a lot of different combinations. Next year is the year we should be measurably improved. And who know, maybe all this road play will toughen them up for the CAA tourney.

However, having only 10 home games is atrocious. There is no excuse, no explaining it away. All 300+ division 1 teams have to schedule OOC too so the excuse that it is "very, very difficult to do" falls on deaf ears.
No VCU, no ODU, No GMU. This will be a hard year to watch the Dukes in person and the new fans that may have been created by JMU's run to the NCAA tournament last year may very well lose interest.

Since when does JMU offer excuses or explanations for fails? No accountability. I've said this 1M times and it's still accurate. Just pay your money and schedule your time and shut up.

The DNR ran a story on future games against these teams. Bourne was quoted saying we something like we may play occasionally but our schedule was so tough otherwise, we really would not pursue games against Mason, ODU, or VCU.

mid-major mentality. shameful, IMO. I am looking for someone to blame for this scheduling debacle- MB, JB et al?

Is the schedule on the website yet? I am going to wait to see if they add some more games before I send Bourne a ranting email...but rest assured, it's coming...

I've been ridiculed on this board in the past when I post anything that suggest Jeff Bourne, as the Athletic Director, is responsible for JMU's athletic dept. Don't go there. Bourne has friends and family that will defend through thick and thin via personally attacking you/me...

So we're raising our first CAA championship banner in almost 20 years against Detroit?

I know these schedules are usually done a few years in advance and what not, but they really couldn't get something better? I have respect for Detroit's program and all, but it would've been nice to have it against an opponent that some of our students would've heard of.

According to video, JMU is working on series with Ole Dirty and Mason. They'll also play Richmond a third time.

Also, Brady gives a positive report on incoming freshmen.

It's a shame that the stereotype of Detroit the city is so bad that playing Detroit the school at the Convo causes me to feel like I should increase my life insurance for that day in case a player shoots me in the stands.
