Has all the conference realignment
that has taken place in the last few years caused you to lose some of your passion for college football?

I know it's always been about the money to some degree, but today, college football feels more like a game between TV markets and cable providers and less about the glory surrounding college football. It has cheapened the game imo.

RE: Has all the conference realignment
Yes. To bring back enthusiasm we must chamge the game. We start the season with a battle of in state football teams battling to be the best in state. Next we battle the surrounding states with the losers then competing for the state which beat them. For example if Ecu won NC then battled vt for the NC vs VA game and won, the Virginia teams would then be playing for north carolina and so on until there are only two states represented. Winner takes all.

Obviously I did not mean that (even though it would be awesome) but I do think true regional conferences with conf champs playing a 16 team tourney would generate the most interest. Either 16 conferences of 8 or 8 of 16 with the championship game being the first round of tourney. 128 may sound like a lot but if they were true regional conferences I believe the G5s would rise by being in conference with some P5s.

Exactly why culture means everything. Without it, the game weakens.

You got me before I got the edit in. Dont get me wrong, it would be awesome. I agree that culture is VERY important, for many reasons.

RE: Has all the conference realignment
As an Ohio State fan, I am not pleased about having to be in the same conference as Rutgers or Maryland. It was kind of disappointment to add those two. Maybe they'll gt better, but I jut feel like the B1G added two more Indianas to the conference - and one of them doesn't play hoops as well.

As a UCF fan, it's pissed me off that UCF can't break through just yet and seems to keep getting blocked.

But neither frustration has really dipped my interest in the sport that much. At least not yet.

RE: Has all the conference realignment
conference realignment happened right when i was applying for colleges.

call me crazy but i factored conference realignment into my college choices because they are very telling about how a school operates. if not for the p12 move i would never have gone to colorado. and now here i am at CU and ive never been happier.

2 of my schools (CU & SU) won big in conference realignment. they both landed in conferences that that fit them culturally and conferences they almost joined earlier. these were long overdue moves for both schools.

CU is finally reunited with utah and has cali access. for the first time ever we finally have a conf. rival and we are finally in a conf. that shares our blueprint recruiting wise and alumni wise.

leaving the BE pained me, but it was a dying breed. SJU fissiled out, playing gtown just wasnt like it used to, uconn was our rival but it was becoming more & more obvious that LV was turning into our new #1 rival. the private school bb league worked well in the past, but SU has grown up and needed a league with large publics and a desire for good football.

so yes i am very grateful for realignment

RE: Has all the conference realignment
to talk about the culture thing that others mentioned

culturally colorado/utah fit pretty well with arizona & california schools. they were always westard looking schools so i dont see an issue there.

cuse/duke almost feels natural and syracuse in the acc makes a lot more sense than rutgers or uconn

tcu fits in with the b12

rutgers/md academically are textbook examples of what a b10 school looks like. MD is a traditional psu rival

it sucks that aggie no longer plays UT but they fit in pretty well with the SEC west

the only non-cultural moves so far are mizz, & wvu

RE: Has all the conference realignment
No, the exact opposite. I really like seeing new matchups. But the main reason I'm more into football has nothing to do with realignment. The new playoff format will level the field a lot. TCU was in the top 4 one year from a non-AQ conference. And it's easier to make the top 4 than the top 2. Also the re-taking back of New Year's weekend, with 3 major bowls on New Year's eve and 3 more on New year's day is going to be awesome.

Unfortunately, we'll have to wait a year for that. But this year we get to see Cuse and Pitt in the ACC and ND for ACC basketball and Lacrosse.

RE: Has all the conference realignment
No, expansion has been great. Utah got a place at the table in the PAC-12 where they belong. Louisville went to the ACC and will get to play with the big boys as an elite member now. TCU made it back to the Big-12 where they should have been all along.

This expansion process takes time but in the end it works itself out and schools end up where they belong with like minded institutions.

It is far from over!

We finally have a playoff and in ten years or less it will be expanded to eight teams, that is something I never believed I would see in my lifetime and now we are are only a few years (in expansion speak) from having a full Eight team playoff to determine a legit National Champion.

Talk of a breakaway or new elite division will only be good for the sport and those of us who belong there will have no problems finding a seat at the table, it may take time but if you earn an invite, it will come.

UNLV, Cincinnati, BYU, UCONN, SDSU, Houston, New Mexico, USF etc. all have the ability to be invited to the big boy table. Many of us are NEXT ON THE LIST.

Expansion is fun and has been great for many programs. Very few have been really hurt by all of the movement (New Mexico State, UTEP, Idaho). In most cases the expansion process has been positive for almost all involved. Programs are where they belong, whether they are willing to admit that or not.

UConn's peers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers, WVU, and BC ... Northeastern schools that take college sports seriously (well, BC and Rutgers say they take basketball seriously03-lmfao).

SMU's peers are TCU, Baylor, and Rice.

Both schools belong in a conference with their local peers, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon. It is what it is. I'm still very enthusiastic about college sports.

RE: Has all the conference realignment
There's something very wrong about the fact that this season, none of PA's teams are playing each other, nor is there the Backyard Brawl as a consolation to that loss.

The cart has gotten way ahead of the horse in college athletics. The answer to this ennui is totally the loss of regionalism, but you can't convince the schools and apologists of it. Nope...it's about "protecting recruiting interests," "the need for 'x' number of home games in order to remain economically stable," "not over-exerting our talent with death-schedules," and all that other horse**** excuses.

Severing rivalries temporarily is one thing. Severing them and then acting like it has to be that way or minimizing their importance is another. We are living in a time when it's definitely the latter.

Yes & No. I like the fact that the ACC has added Miami, VT, BC, SU, Pitt, UL and 5/8 ND. I hate the fact that we still only get 12 regular season games, which means (a) fewer good OOC games, and (b) fewer games vs. the other division. If we could have at least as many games as there are teams in a conference, that would help a lot... I'd be happy with 13 games, though.

Not really. I have long known that college athletics is a filthy cesspool of corruption but I still like it. All realignment has done is make these criminals' naked greed more transparent.

However, if the professionalism that everyone seems to be championing increases too much, that would kill it for me once and for all. I watch the NHL, not the AHL and I watch MLB not AAA baseball. Similarly, I would choose the NFL over minor league professional football every single time.

The good news is that, eventually, college football will add a 13th game for everybody.

The bad news is that, once that happens, people will want 14 games, and will be just as unhappy as they are now, until they get it.

Including CCGs, bowl games, and the occasional trip to Hawaii, there are a lot of college teams out there that play 13 or 14 games as it is, which is equal to (or more than) the # of games that NFL teams played, from 1920-1977 -- nearly six decades. The insatiable thirst for More -- more games, more bowls, more money, more TV-exposure, more luxury suites, more everything -- slowly changed college football into NFL-lite. And the process isn't over yet.
