are you guys planning on building a new arena?
I asked this a few weeks ago. Apparently it is planned, but there are no concrete details at the moment.

Upgrading the facilities for all the non-revenue sports first is apparently a bigger priority for UTSA's administration.

Yes a new 10K seat arena in our new Park West facility will likely be completed in phase 3. Yesterday we offically opened Park West after completion of phase 1 which included a new soccer and track field.

I understand that y'all don't have even good attendance numbers right now but remember that you're in a different situation now. That is,in a much more competitive and entertaining venue than what you had. If, a school like Enemas U. can have a 14k? seat bkb arena in a city of 100k then your school with over 1m population can and should build a much bigger arena than one seating 10k. Look to the future and with time you might fill a 12k and higher arena. Don't scrimp.

I'm not "new" to college basketball, have been around awhile, and even I had to look up Chowan to determine who they were. You're right, there are probably better options out there for drawing paying fans but would still be a near-guaranteed "W".

WKU will see a big bump once we get in CUSA and start playing some of our old rivals. It should be around 7000.

I hope you are right, but that might be a stretch...I would guess average attend. increases by around 1300 and we average around 6k first season in CUSA....

I was really surprised to see the 4,700 number by the HillToppers with the legacy you guys have, but you should see a good increase over the next few years. You're replacing ULL, UALR, ASU, Troy, USA, La Monroe with USM, UAB, UTEP, ODU, Charlotte....and your fans will learn that Marshall is a legitimate threat on any night.

The top of the new CUSA line-up will give you a significant bump in marketability for season tickets, students, and the general fan that sees a few games a year. I'd think that your fans should be looking at this move conference move as a really big deal for the HillToppers.

You hit the nail on the head. This move is big for our football program but its much bigger for our basketball program. The Sun Belt has been good to us in football, no complains, but the basketball has been downright terrible for a long time. WKU is also to blame for some of that over the last few years. The hire of Ken McDummy really set our program back and it hurt our attendance. That is what got him fired. Since Ray has taken over it has been coming back. I expect us to average around 6000 this year and we will see another big bump once we start CUSA play.02-13-banana

The HillToppers BB program will have the opportunity to once again be nationally relevant in this conference. You'll be playing some pretty well respected programs and the conference will be well balanced without every team pointing their best effort towards one program. Don't sleep on the remaining USM/Marshall/UAB/UTEP programs and the stronger additions speak for themselves; but the WKU BB program has a legitimate opportunity to really shine in this realignment process.

But this is just one guy's opinion, which is worth what you're paying for it.

Your basketball attendance will rise because of the UTEP game. I am sure there will be over 1k UTEP fans in San Antonio for that game.

UTEP fans with that same mindset, really bug me. I suppose may explains an average attendance of 4,600 or so for ECU. But to have that attendance level, and call someone else crap, is probably not a fair thing to do.

At any rate, I get on Miner fans who only show up to what they consider to be "good games". I'm sure Lebo an Floyd would both say that each team needs some tune-up games. This is where teams improve. Contrary to the Dick Vitale claims, even Duke has them.

I'm probably one of the biggest ECU basketball fans there is. When you schedule D3 non scholarship crap that bores me enough that I don't even open my computer you know the **** is bad. Anyone that thinks I'm not critical of our administration or Lebo when it's deserved is blind as hell.

SJ, would you know how hard that Holland might have tried to tie in hoops with the football series vs. UNC, NC State, VA Tech and WVU? I would think, at worst, a 2-for-1 in hoops could have been negotiated.

There are folks up in air on our board that we're playing Ole Miss straight up home & home in hoops as part of the four-year football contract. I think it is a small price to pay and support it. Supposedly the same thing with Tennessee in order for the football series to revive. I don't know if hoops is part of the upcoming football series with Kansas but certainly hope so.

The Pirates getting UNCW back on the schedule is a good step. I think there are some additional adequate series with minimal travel expenses such as Richmond, Coastal, College of Charleston, Campbell, ODU (after next year), William & Mary, Appy (in Charlotte?)

Maybe 2-for-1 with USC Upstate, UNC Greensboro and UNC Asheville
And can probably get three-for-ones (or buy games) with Hampton, Norfolk State, or SC State. Those first two won't hurt the RPI much either.

Southern Miss..4,802

I'm hoping USM can top the 5k mark this year and thinking the contributing factors are and in no particular order:

carryover from the last 2 years success (NCAA berth and NIT run)
5-0 on the just completed Bahama tour games
Thursday C-USA games instead of Wednesday
1st game is an in-state SWAC team (Jackson St) that's 90 miles away
D10 has embraced the fan base

Negatives:
(So far) Only 1 confirmed home game in November and 6 road games so if we get off to a bad start it could be hard to get fans back
No quality OOC teams coming to our place (yes I know fans should want to see the home team but facts are facts). Yes JSU comes here but that is it

Just my .02 cents but I'm personally expecting us to break the 5k mark this year

Even those games generate revenue for the team (which is also support for the program). But non-season ticket holder fans who "pick" which games to go to, are not fully supporting the team.

Slice it any way you want.

There is no way I'm driving to see that garbage anymore and I probably would if it were UNCG or Campbell. As long as our administrators chooses to give us the worst OOC schedule in America I won't be supporting it in any way shape or form. When UTEP has 4 D2's then you can preach fanhood to me cause I've sat in that arena many times when we sucked as bad as anything and watched single digit win teams play 3 or 4 D2 teams a year I'm completely done with it until they cut the ****. We have a good program now and our players and fans don't deserve this crap. We'd have better attendance too if they gave us game worth seeing not layering it with 4 wet blankets attendance killers.

It really should be unacceptable to ECU fans. There are dozens of mid-major and low-major schools in NC, GA, VA, and SC. Surely ECU can get games from those teams.

Sad thing is it's not. We used to draw 5000-6000 a year with loser teams, now we have a solid program and can't crack 5k and most of that is because Holland doubled these stupid D2 games. We didn't even play D2's in the 90's, this crap came about on Hollands watch. Former chairman of the NCAA selection committe signing off on this garbage no less.
