Wow, that is surprising. I've never thought that the Canadians took their college sports too seriously, so I thought it would be like playing an average NAIA team, at best.

Hell before we got in this deal, I never thought of Canadian College Basketball period - I never even knew it existed.

Why would it not exist? Canada has universities and they have athletes. They've got everything you've got down in the states for the most part. Canadians just treat college sports for what it is, amateur athletics and it hasn't really been monetized. Even the "powerhouse" football programs might draw 15K if they're lucky or if their stadium holds that many fans. It's actually quite refreshing in some ways. Canadian version of the NCAA is called the CIS.

I had a discussion with a friend about all the corruption, G5/P5, etc. in collegiate athletics in the states a few weeks ago. He looked at me in disbelief and basically said that something that would only happen in the US. I think he's probably right.

Fun fact. The NBA's last #1 draft pick is Canadian.

RE: College Basketball In Canada
Well of course Canadians would be shocked by the US collegiate system.

Hockey. Biggest pro sport (7 teams). Top prospects go into lower tier professional ranks rather than play college.
Baseball. One top tier pro team (formerly two), four minor league. Top prospects go into lower tier professional ranks rather than play college.
Soccer. Three top tier teams. Top prospects go into lower tier professional ranks rather than play college.
Basketball. One top tier pro team (formerly two). Top prospects spend no more than a year in college.

Overall their sports culture isn't one that sends prospects to college as a quasi-minor league experience.

Roughly 10% of the population as the USA will limit the # of major league franchises. Obviously it limits the talent pool as well.

stAte beats Calgary by 20 - 96 to 76.

one more game tomorrow . . . but comparing scores stAte is definitely better than UALR, despite Pappy's picks.

Canada has at least one NCAA team (Simon Fraser) and they compete in the toughest D-II league in the US, the GNAC.

You shouldn't lose games during these trips. Got some work to do.

Good news is that it looks like that work is on defense, not offense. Brady can fix that.

Apparently Brady Ball won't fly up north!

From Coach Clapacs' blog:

Quote:The FIBA International rules that we played by was restrictive to our normal defensive principles of tough, physical play and active hands. Playing in another country, we certainly expected to face some difficult, unfavorable calls, but that is life on the road in the game of basketball. However, in game three we saw our opponent shoot over 40 free throws to our 11 on a total of 37 to 15 fouls committed, respectively. Again, welcome to Canada, eh?

if by 'brady-ball' you actually mean 'hack-ball' you are correct.

it's what peterson did to get in fant's head every time they played.

brady doesn't own the patent. middle mugged the living mierda out of you every trip down the floor. the unibrow employs it in little rock. it's all over the college game. rick pitino mugs you for 96 feet. he knows they'll eventually tire of blowing the whistle.

i personally don't like it but it can be effective. i do like teams that play good dee but by active hands he means grabbing and hand checking the offensive player. that's not basketball.....that's groping. move your feet and stay between your man and the hoop. defense 101.

RE: College Basketball In Canada
Beed is right (pause for shock) the American game is much more about physical play, and getting refs to reward physical play that might be a foul, rather than just good defense. In the international game, they call everything.
