Pretty sure we also offered Devin Robinson--though don't see much chance in landing him.

Ben Finney, Frank Hassell and Kent Bazemore were pretty darn good local players. Id put all of them in "Mario Mullen" category. Mullen would have been one of the greats if not for his car wreck. Darius wasnt bad either.
Finney was recruited more for football locally, although he was a standout in basketball. Hassell and Bazemore received little interest outside of smaller D1 schools, and if I remember correctly, Darius James' only D1 offer was ODU.
We need to aim higher than that, plain and simple. BT went after some bigger recruits, but he was never really able to seal the deal. I think JJ is a better recruiter than BT because he doesn't seem dead-set on playing one style of basketball every year, but also the addition of someone like Bryant Stith is HUGE on the recruiting front. NBA experience will get kids' attention. He also has connections beyond ODU, so he can pitch kids on the premise of getting them to the next level.
The thing is, we can't judge this staff for the recruits coming in this year, or really even next. They've missed the boat on a lot of guys, which is why they're focusing a lot on 2015 and beyond.

Doc we did, pretty certain he listed his schools and we didn't make the cut. I'll check and see where I saw that.

Beside the NBA history. The best thing about Stith is he has kids in the AAU circuit. Before coming to ODU he was part of it. He was watching players without any limitations.

We had Trey Porter, a 6-9, 215, center from Potomac HS on campus yesterday. He's a big & solid player, very active. He goes to school near where Coop went. He also has an offer from GMU like Coop did. I think we have a good shot at him, he also plays on Boo William's team.
That's all we can ask of the staff, get the recruits here and show them what we have.

He's a nice kid, but the listing of 225 is a little on the heavy side. Heard we have a good chance, but UVA is apparently starting to show interest as well.

Well, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect the staff to close the deal occasionally.

Am I understanding you correctly or did you leave off the sarcasm emoticon? 6'9" 225 is probably not to heavy.

The other thing I am looking for is to see if (and this is a big if) Stith and JJ can get B.J. to come to ODU. Highly unlikely but he would probably be one of the best recruits in ODU history and would really boost the program

I was referring to the fact that I don't believe that he weighs 225...he looked skinnier than that.

6'9" and 225 is pretty skinny. For comparison, Nick Wright was 6'8" 208. Odell Hodge was 6'9" 255.

His dad already put that to rest. He's going to UVA.

After the anemic BT 50 ppg years, I find the name "Trey" very refreshing as a name of a recruit!

Stith's cred is going to play a huge role in determining if we can get this program back to where it should be.

2016 News:
#Henrico 2016 wing De'Monte Buckingham will be taking an unofficial visit to #ODU later this month.
He has an offer from Virginia Tech and has visited Maryland. Glad to see the staff is getting 2016 kids on campus already

We did offer De'Monte this weekend while he was on an unofficial visit.
