New dis from the Tribune
Back page of today's Tribune has a Purdue preview written by Shannon Ryan and in the process of trying to make the Boilermakers look better, the third paragraph from the end reads as follows: They also face a schedule that includes three teams that achieved BCS bowl berths last season (Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Michigan State) and Ohio State."

Excuse me, but isn't the Orange Bowl a BCS bowl? We lost Fred Mitchell and his replacement (Shannon) can't connect the dots to her new beat? Northern Illinois (the Sept. 28 PU opponent) means Purdue faces four teams that achieved BCS bowl berths last season. That's in addition to failing to note that Hazell's new program has to go up against a school that accounted for one of three losses in its 11-3 vault to "prominence." Being a Ball State grad, there's no question the sports editor (Mike Kellams) won't admit to his bias against the Huskies, but is it too much to ask for simple accuracy.
Unlike the side column's note on Coach Darrell Hazel Trib mis-spellling, not mine: The question facing Hazell will be whether he can recreate the same magic from the MAC in the Big Ten.

There was a different thread, and a couple posters emailed the writer to let them know. It's pathetic that it would be required. How can you write about college football and NOT know NIU was in the Orange Bowl last year. I'd be embarrassed if I had made a mistake like that.

Those morons go through their professional life with blinders on. They can see nothing but B1G or whatever big schools they are promoting/writing about. It's just a shame that readers think these turkeys know anything. I crap more brain cells than these writers have.

It's called research. Some junior writer probably gave input (or even this clown) tried to show some "intriguing" fact that they likely "tried" to figure out themselves and were wrong. Hell, they may have gotten from another source. I wouldn't read into it more than just plain bad writing. Happens every day in the shrinking paper industry, and the cyber media world of everyone has a column and a view.

The have an article on Stingliy in the paper today. I don't have a subsription anymore but they are doing it the right way. Stingliy, Lynch, Santa, and other Chitown athletes should be written about. It allows family and friends to read and enjoy. All of Romeoville will read about stingliy today.

Maybe they hired her out of high school for cheap labor? After all, they do have to cut costs.

RE: New dis from the Tribune
Shannon Ryan has already been out to DeKalb twice since getting on the beat three weeks ago and is excited to be covering us. I had a chance to ask her about the Purdue thing yesterday and she was quite upset because that paragraph was added into the story (obviously incorrectly) by an editor or someone on the desk. Everyone holds the writer responsible for everything in the paper because it's his or her name out there, but so much of it is put together by the nameless (and yes, not highly paid) people who edit, lay out, write headlines, etc.

Thanks for the clarification. That's good to know.

OK fine. We're just so used to that sort of thing, and it still doesn't make the paper look good, regardless of whose fault it was.

Thanks for pointing that out, I think the defensive fans get riled up before they consider things like this.

How tall is Carey? What are his measurables? :-)

Just curious, seems pretty tall (though most seem a little tall to me....)

He was a B1G OL so he would have to be over 6'5"

I'm impressed Shannon has already been out to DeKalb as much as she has this year. Great to see.
