RE: Egyptian Troops Move Against Pro-Morsi Sit-In
Yesterday, on a local news segment on Egypt, KUSA had on a University of Denver middle east expert. He pointed out that the Egyptian army is pretty much the strongest force in northern Africa. The majority of Egyptians trust them far more than politicians to keep them safe from the tyranny the MB wants. They are what stands between MB hegemony in N. Africa and the chance for a secular government that leaves them relatively free.

On another note, yesterday I read a CNN story about the events in Egypt and the majority of comments were from Egyptians and they were slamming CNN for not reporting the truth of what is happening there. Most of them pointed out that the MB had been fortifying their barricaded encampments and they had lots of weapons. Claimed that the MB was the force fomenting violence and that the military gave them warnings to leave several times. They slammed U.S. media reporting that portrays the MB as moderates and the military as bloodthirsty tyrants who fired on unarmed protesters, when in fact the MB wanted this confrontation and is willfully pushing the bloodshed.

I would tend to believe the people of the country rather than the propaganda press, both here and abroad.

I hope that if the MB continues on this path that the military crush them. Most Egyptians would be OK with that. Useful idiots like McLame and Grahamnesty are doing Obama's bidding in backing the MB. They should be denounced as Obama's 'Arab spring' chickens come home to roost.

Yea we were saying that when Obama was praising the Arab Spring... In the case of Coptic Christians it went from 0-Backwards...

Quote:how the heck are you supposed to get a nation of 85 million to support a president when no presidential candidate got more than 25% of the popular vote?

This is what Democracy is John, how many European elections end with a party getting 50%

Quote:you need to do it like how the first few US states did it, elect a congress have the congress vote on a president not the people. when a 2 national party system is developed and trust in the government is restored then you can give the power of electing the president to the people

If you beleive the problem in the middle east is procedural and not cultural well... there is a hell of a lot of sand for you to bury your head in.

As much as it pains me.. i have to side with John on this.

Ironically, i think psaul hit on the head:

Quote:I'm sure Egyptians miss Mubarak at times like these..

My primary interest at the moment with this crackdown was the vast differences in numbers. The pro-Morsi crowd is claiming 500+ dead (or at least that was the number i heard. The military is claiming less than a dozen? (at least as of yesterday).

I actually disagree, although I did see an article if Foreign Affairs or Foreign Policy magazine positing that the process should've begun wit a truth and reconciliation hearing. I think that the people of Egypt needed to suffer the MB just as Gaza needed to suffer under Hamas before they rise up and say enough. The problem in Egypt is that the military may become too entrenched in the general economy to ever be undone.

I think the West will give the Egyptian Military a Pass. They just have to keep the Canal open.
