How much is UH paying us for the UC-UH game?
Just curious. Given the amount of #$%^ I see them talking about us in general and HRS specifically, I'm beginning to think we should have told them no.

HRS is a dump. Shouldn't be, doesn't have to be, but is. 60 years of neglect will do that to any facility.

Hopefully the rehab begins soon.

My point wasn't that HRS doesn't deserve criticism, more that we are helping them out of a bind, even after they totally screwed us in realignment, and they are largely being thankless and complaining about it. And that makes me wish we had said no. Unless they gave us a lot of money.
[And yes, I realized that ultimately we have to take responsibility for our conference situation.]

I understand where you are coming from. Just there are two sides to the argument, and we are most definitely not without fault in this discussion.

Does it really matter?
At the end of the day, Rice gets more $ out of this. UH can talk all the smack they want, it won't matter when we kick their a$$ this season.

It was nice fifty years ago. SWC games were a big event then.

But to answer the question 115k, I am not sure why Rice was hassling UH about the lockers....but anyway, thanks for letting us use it.

There is a lot of bad feelings between the two AD offices, and that is just the way it is, but to use an outdated stadium as leverage to get more money is funny, but we would do the same if Rice had torn down there stadium and needed a place to play.

What's UH's beef with us? Not that I have a hard time believing there would be bad blood with our former AD....

I'm not aware of any particular rift between the two departments. Besides the reality that the two school have to directly compete for the scraps of local marketshare.

RE: How much is UH paying us for the UC-UH game?
That's actually part of the problem Hymie...
I hope I can say this clearly, and though perhaps not entirely PC, I think the thought would be well received...
We really shouldn't compete for the same market. Neither Rice nor UH are UT, and someone wanting to watch Alabama, LSU, UT or the like isn't going to get what they want out of UH or Rice. I'll let you guys define where/who you think your market is... but it isn't generally the casual football fan for either of us. It MIGHT be the casual guy for coming to a game... but the BIG money doesn't come from attracting an additional 10k locals or whatever to our games because they can buy tickets to our games but not A&M's, and we are in town and they simply must be present for college football to enjoy it. That's an incredibly small and not particularly valuable market as far as I'm concerned. Not that we shouldn't go after it, but that isn't where TV money (which is the vast majority of the money we're talking about) comes from.
Notre Dame took advantage of the Catholic affinity group. BYU, the Mormons. Miami went after the "bad boys". These are all NATIONAL, and not merely local markets. For Rice, our national target market should be the athletic nerds. Call if David vs Goliath, Brains vs Brawn, Alpha Beta's and Tri-Lam's, Jocks and nerds... whatever you want to call it... We happen to be as smart as the guys at Harvard, who successfully compete on the field against guys who can't spell Rice.
THAT is our local AND national target market.... and UH's should be something different. Our market may not be large in numbers, but it also has an extremely small number of schools competing for their dollars... which by virtue of their education should be well above the national average.
Again, not trying to rude, but I don't really see UH being that unique as a University in college football.... so while their prospective audience is huge, there are 200 other teams competing for that audience and more than 50 of those have huge advantages already.
The only guys who would arguably be our competition (Stanford, Northwestern, Duke, Vandy) are already in AQ conferences and haven't really targeted these people I'm talking about anyway.... Stanford is really the only one that has and only somewhat... and a whole lot of those people live in Houston.

RE: How much is UH paying us for the UC-UH game?
In order to survive in this current state of college football, every University must have top notch facilities, it’s an arms race which I do not like, but Presidents of Universities in this Country have embraced this philosophy. You can go after a certain type of player that fits your program, but you had better have something that is better than the Berry Center in this City at the bare minimum.

By the way the UH Football Stadium costs have increased from $105 million to $120 million. I've heard the final cost will be in the neighborhood of $130-135 million.

Well said Hambone. We should embrace that everywhere we can, every chance we get. It would set us apart with a target - *and* enhance our academic reputation.

The price is going up a little, but UH is adding a few more things for the fans, and moving onto another phase of the building that was supposed to come later.
