They look down into PA and see the short-term benefits but can't get past the long-term threats. The jobs that come in are temporary and then they move on. Housing is built to put up all the influx of workers and when they leave a few years later there are hundreds of empty apartments and unvisited stores. Some see the short-term potential and hope it creates long-term sustainability, but if there is nothing to pick up the ball after it is dropped by the oil industry, it becomes a modern ghost-town. That isn't even getting to the environmental issue. One thing Central and Upstate NY have is a lot of water. There have been arguments made that water is going to be the oil of the world in the next 25-50 years. Hell, all you have to do is look at what Las Vegas is currently doing. NYS will have plenty of water and will be well positioned to benefit ... and a lot of people don't want to risk that with fracking.

There is decades worth of natty gas at current production levels in all the major fields (Macellus, Baaken in ND, Eagle Ford in Tx, etc, etc. Mind boggling amounts. And the #s keep getting revised upward by USGS and other geologists (Penn State and NY State). I know a guy that has land in NEPA & making $$ hand over fist). Nothing short term about that. Getting oil out of there also. Coal shale is major reason why US slated to become a net exporter by 2020. NY might be the only state that has a major field not on fed land that isn't taking advantage.
Va has plenty and is not taking advantage, in fact Rockingham county has plenty in the GW. By the way BDK thanks for taking the time to post this and many other interesting stat and facts they are a big reason I come here, and I personally know much more about fcs football thanks to you.

I should have included the bolded part above. Marcellus is mostly PA, WV, NY, and OH. Only a small fraction of it is in western VA, mostly on fed land in the GW and Jefferson

About time! He should have gotten life in prison for shooting Jesse James.

There's 8-10 threads on the 1st page of this forum alone that have less to do with JMU sports than this thread, many of them labeled OT. Yet I don't see you bitching about them:
-Cantrell thread
-thread on the former marine football player.
-thread on MAC bands.
-thread on the MAC/Sun Belt Bowl being held in a stadium about the size of BFS.
-thread on college football attendance.
-thread on 403 forbidden.
-thread on NCAA 14 computer game.
-thread on new ODU football helmets.
etc, etc..

They should all probably be moved by the moderator over to The OT forum. If this thread was moved to OT, I'm fine with that as long as all the above we're also moved. After all, why do we have an OT forum if most OT threads are going to be allowed to remain on the main forum?

H'burg gets back tomorrow. He is the mod. I think that is why most of these OT's have popped up. That and its the off season. I admit I did over react to this thread. Its really no big deal to me. However, I can't wait till the ODU helmet thread is moved or killed. It is such a ODU troll fest.

"Derail?" How about just add a little humor to a topic that is waaaaaay OT, in an effort to keep me and my fellow alums awake until that first kickoff. I ain't trying to derail sh!t!

I guess the answer is, we don't need an OT category! I don't know why someone makes such a big deal out of where the threads are posted. If it is a topic that doesn't interest you, don't read it. I have never gone to the OT threads and read any of them. They are fine right here, for me.

Agree with BSKB 24. I'd be in favor of getting rid of those sub-forums.

This.

Why does anyone care what a thread is about or where it's posted? I find things like this pretty interesting and would probably not see it if it were on the other OT board. I simply don't think to look there. What does it matter?

I agree. The top of the page is cluttered with stuff that no one ever reads. How else can you explain the lack of interest in the thread about the Atlanta Braves? America's Team!

Just put everything here and if it seems off-topic, then use "OT" so that anyone offended by a less than pristine sports message board can avert his gaze.
