You might be closer than you think--except there might be only 5 conferences per the latest Mhver3 tweets. This may not be right, but it makes a lot of sense. My biggest argument against a 65 team split is that it is simply too small and its bad for the networks. Slicing 50% of the fanbases and 50% of the inventory doesn't make sense for the networks...and folks, the networks pay the bills.

Huge news! Espn wants as much d4 content as it can get its slimy hands on as does Fox. Espn is encouraging ACC to add more teams if D4 comes

MHver3 ‏@MHver3 3h
Both Espn and fox are encouraging B12 to think about 14 or even 16. Will keep payouts same! Any current MWC or AAC team. IF D4 or split.

MHver3 ‏@MHver3 3h
This could dash the hopes of a 6th conference in D4...

MHver3 ‏@MHver3 3h
Espn telling ACC more content needed to fill their new network. Telling B12 will pay premium on CCG

MHver3 ‏@MHver3 2h
Big12 leaders still unsure if CCG payout will offset splitting bowl and playoff money so many ways. CCG payout would be to be close to sugar

MHver3 ‏@MHver3 2h
Perhaps a semifinal game

MHver3 ‏@MHver3 2h
I promise you this. When January rolls around and D4 meetings take place, the P5 will already have the script in place.

He's right on at least this point.

If (and it's a big if) the push to 16 becomes the norm, The AAC and the MWC would not necessarily be detroyed.

Cinci and UCONN to the ACC.

Kansas and Mizzu to the B10.

WVU, TCU and Kansas State to the SEC

TX, Texas Tech, Okie and Okie State to the Pac 12.

Baylor and Iowa State would back into the AAC... most likely joining several MWC schools in the process. Basketball would suffer somewhat but in other sports, it would be a wash.

The MWC folks can claim what they want but they do not have the strengths that the AAC has at this time. I'll be proven right in the long run...

TCU to the SEC? Really? A small private school to the SEC?

Why do people think that the SEC picks up the left overs?

If TCU is thought to be considered, the SEC goes after a small private school like Miami or public schools like Florida State or Oklahoma.

Agreed. No way SEC gets close to any of TCU ,KSU or WVU.

Conferences are never going to wedge themselves into nice neat round numbers to suit bloggers and sportswriters. The Big 10 stuck at 11 for a very long time because the hassle of 11 didn't outweigh making a move they weren't comfortable with.

I asked a high level Sun Belt official "What do you do if one Monday morning James Madison calls and says we've made up our mind and we want in, and 15 minutes later Missouri State calls and says the same thing."

His answer?

"We figure out how to make a 13 team schedule work until the day arrives that a 14th of a least that caliber is interested."
