Montgomery talking about ESPN MAC-Sun Belt bowl
Another game is being looked at between MAC and Sun Belt teams, in Montgomery in 2014.

This is separate from the Charleston event.

No thanks. A second MAC vs Sun Belt bowl in Alabama. That sounds awful... I would vote no bowl if it comes down to this. I really hope Charleston comes together. This game sounds horrible.

Charleston SC is on the ocean. Mobile AL is on the Gulf.

But Montgomery? What's the game plan here, five bowl games for the MAC, three of them against the Sunbelt?

If ESPN is looking for more bowl inventory, this may not bode well:

1) It's more likely the game will be on ESPNU, or in a less desirable time slot

2) ESPN has already lost a higher profile bowl, or expects to lose a higher profile bowl to another network

3) Another bowl is expected to fold

NO, NO, NO, NO!

Would rather not have a bowl tie-in than play this bowl in Montgomery. 03-puke

The Charleston Bowl would be 100x better.

Montgomery has actually come a long way, although yes Mobile is 10x better and Charleston is 100x better.

Edit: Let me clear that when I say "Montgomery's come a long way" I meant the city's attractiveness overall.

The Cramton Bowl itself, on the other hand, was in absolutely disastrous condition the last time I saw it about 12 years ago. I heard that it was being renovated and partly rebuilt in 2011-2012. I don't know what the end-result of that is or will be, but it definitely needed a LOT of work.

Funny isn't it that Little Rock's proposed Sun Belt - MAC match-up couldn't get a TV deal but Montgomery could... of course being owned by ESPN had nothing to do with it.

That is stupid. MTSU, LaTech for example stayed home and were not 5-7.

If they wanted to avoid 6-6 teams they could have left them out and taken one of those.

But then people would gripe about that too.

Not really. 35 bowls will lead to 37, then 40. These Sun Belt-MAC bowls aren't the only ones being discussed, and there have already been close calls on coming up with enough 6-6 teams with the current 35. Two years at this rate, and we'll have a 5-7 team in a bowl.

Blame this on the P5 greedy pigs at the trough. They all sign 12 bowls each (thats like 60 bowls right there) and then they complain the G5 wants to share more than 15? Give me a break. They created all of this realignment, BCS, etc.

I thought it was set but the MAC didn't sign off on it? Is that because they couldn't get a TV deal?

Yep. They never could get a TV deal. I don't have anything definitive but rumor mill says they were holding out for a Friday or Saturday and the only date ESPN offered that met that criteria would have displaced the state championships.

We're not talking about 5-7 teams bowling here..the SB only has 3 guaranteed bowls as does the MAC. No, these would be bowl slots for 8-4 type teams from outside the power 5 that does want their 5-7 teams to go bowling!

Yes.

The SBC, MAC and CUSA 3.0 still are in a position of producing excess bowl eligible teams.

I would suspect those conferences will continue to have excess eligible, especially CUSA which is only looking at maybe 5 bowl games for 14 schools. They'll have years of 7-8 eligible.
