"Coming To America", Eddie Murphy, St John's...
On vacation with family in Upstate NY this week... last night on Spike while trying to get kids to sleep, had Coming To America on, the great comedy from 1988 with Eddie Murphy.

His character's name was 'Akeem', probably tipping his hat to Akeem Olajuwan.

Also, at one point, his love interest's sister says "we have an extra ticket to the St John's game, you want to join us...?" During the game at MSG, a couple of ushers bow down to him in the restroom line and take their photo with him "just a couple of guys I met in the restroom"...

Anyway, they show 4 or 5 clips of game action... the movie was released in '88, so i think it was a Christmas tourney, showing Marist vs St John's. Had clip of a Rik Smits dunk for Marist, where Eddie Murphy yells 'in the face!', though I don't know why he was cheering for the Red Foxes. The next day, St John's beat eventual national champ Kansas by 14 (KU had beaten Memphis State).

Anyway, I was trying to think of other movies, etc, that had college sports teams' references. Would be a good marketing strategy for the school and conference. In "Yes Man" a couple of years ago, Jim Carrey goes to a Nebraska football game. Any other movies you guys can think of? Or even videos like Biz Markie/ Georgetown? :o)

Not necessarily about Xavier athletics, but scenes from Ides of March (Clooney/Goessling) were filmed at Xavier's campus. You can see X's logo occasionally, and one of the two actors is sitting in a chair in the Cintas Center in one scene.

The last 12 minutes of the Ides of March were filmed at Xavier with Ryan Gosling sitting on the floor at the Cintas Center at the ending. We are Marshall - Marshall gets their first win against Xavier at the end of the movie. Lastly, Hoosiers is filmed at Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler. Great movie which was based on Milan's state championship. The head coach at Milan, Marv Wood, ended up being a guidance counselor at my high school. Great man and it was unfortunate that he succumbed to cancer in 1999.

In Band of Brothers they mention how Buck Compton played football for UCLA.

Johnny Utah in Point Break played FB at Ohio St.

The opening scene of Tommy Boy is supposed to be Marquette.

The Big Chill always comes to mind for me since it's about a group of Michigan alums reuniting to attend the funeral of a friend. Lots of Michigan references throughout the movie, including a scene where they are all watching a Michigan-Michigan State football game. The movie has such a strong connection to the school that Michigan called its outdoor hockey game at the Big House a couple of years ago "The Big Chill" and had the director/writer of the film (who was a Michigan alum) and several cast members there.

The two most famous movie references for my undergrad alma mater (Illinois) are that (1) HAL 9000 from 2001 was created at "HAL Plant at the University of Illinois" (recall that when he's getting shut down at the end of the movie, he starts spewing out his earliest memories, he talks about becoming operational in Urbana and then starts singing "Daisy") and (2) Tom Cruise in "Risky Business", when asked by his girlfriend how his Princeton interview (which took place in the middle of the massive party scene) went, he responds, "Looks like the University of Illinois!" and spins around with his Ray-Bans. That's a hilarious and fairly famous scene, albeit a bit of a backhanded slap at the school.

On the TV front, Lt. Col. Blake on MASH was an Illini fan (he carried around an Illinois mug) and Cam from Modern Family played football at Illinois (which of you watch the show, is a statement that is funny in and of itself). Hugh Hefner was also an alum, so we get a lot of pop culture mileage out of the connection. (I remember in the "MTV Cribs" tour of the Playboy Mansion, Hef pointed out some of his stuff from college.)

of course, the most famous one is Forrest Gump with Alabama.

Then there was Blue Chips with Bobby Knight.

How many have showed up in the movie? Not just mentioned but seen as a shirt, banner, letterman jacket?

There was a recent movie that showed Louisiana Tech playing someone in football.
