WKU Can Win Their First Championship Early
WKUsports.com reported today that WKU will join CUSA this season as an affiliate member in Women's Swimming & Diving. The Lady Toppers are one of the top programs in the nation, falling just outside of the Top 25 at the end of last season. The Lady Toppers just hauled in the #3 recruiting class in the nation.

The Lady Toppers do not, however, engage in vegetable molestation.

The guy that scoffs at the notion of an all sports trophy, makes a post about women's swim and dive???

You know I like you, at least I feel we've come to a decent understanding, but I can't figure you out brother. We're gonna have to have a beer before a game sometime, after your 21 of course...:03-wink:04-cheers

I have no issue, and actually enjoy a lot of sports, I take issue with the idea of a consolation trophy that allows a school to lay claim to being te best school, while not winning a major sport championship.

Outside of the pure athleticism of swimming, there are plenty of reasons to enjoy swimming.

Hey I swam competitively for ten years and coached for like three.

Funny how stopping swimming and turning 21 seemed to coincide with gaining like 30 pounds...

I get what you're saying, but it's not a consolation prize, it's about having all your teams performing at a high level, which in my opinion is something to take pride in. Softball is the only sport we sponsor we haven't been at least above average in since I enrolled at MT 10 years ago.

MT and WKU have two of the best athletic departments among "mid-majors" in the country. We've had hard fought contests in nearly every sport we both sponsor because we both take having a well rounded department so seriously.

How many schools compete in this sport on the 1A level? Just wondering how high "just out of the Top 25" is in relation to the number of teams competing?

Agreed, and well said. It was never even intended as a "consolation prize" anyway. Sometimes it goes to the school with the most titles, and sometimes it doesn't. But the school which performed the best in the aggregate of all the sports combined certainly deserves recognition for it. Individual sports have their own champions; the Commissioner's Cup goes to the overall top athletic department.

It's not unlike television networks... Individual shows compete against each other in their genres for ratings (comedy, talk shows, documentaries, dramas, etc.), or even for top honors within their time slots. And the major networks you'll find those shows on are likewise competing for the top overall ratings. There's relevance in both.

There are over 200 Division 1 Women's Swimming & Diving Teams in the NCAA.

Just some of the conferences and number of teams that sponsor the sport...
A10 - 11 teams
ACC - 11 teams
B1G - 12 teams
B12 - 5 teams
Big East - 10 teams
SEC - 11 teams
MWC - 8 teams
MAC - 8 teams
PAC12 - 9 teams

What I'm finding hard to believe, WKU like UNT, hasn't won their conference in quite some time, but they automatically think coming into C-USA, the championship is theirs for the taking.

When you say "won their conference" are you referring to women's swimming/diving?

If so, then you have no idea what you are talking about. WKU won the championship in women's swimming/diving last season. They have won it 9 times in their 15 years of existance.

I could not agree more.. I have been going to games between WKU and MTSU since I went to school at WKU in the 70's
I look at where both schools have progressed over the years
ovc > Sun Belt > CUSA.

I live here in the Atlanta area with all of these Georgia and Georgia Tech Alums and when MTSU not only beat Ga Tech last year but smoked them it was great...

As did I. Although MT and WKU have a love-hate (mostly hate) relationship when facing off, I root for the Blue Raiders everytime they face an OOC opponent, especially one from a "big boy" conference.

You do know that "like saying 'like'" is not, like, actually a grammatically correct way of conversing don't you? In spoken conversation I see why people who don't typically speak in front of crowds use the crutch but in the written word it's beyond obnoxious.

This isn't my fight, but I believe he is using it as a synonym for "approximately," not as a gap filler. Still annoying but much less so.

Anyway, on topic, I have always liked the concept of a Commissioner's Cup, and not because we just won the WAC. I think it does speak to a high level of play across your athletic department.

In my experience, here are the fans that do not like the Commissioner's Cup:

1) School is good at football, basketball, and/or baseball but sucks at everything else. Fans complain about the Cup being irrelevant or pointless.
2) School does not sponsor as many sports as other conference schools. Fans complain about unfair scoring.

That's pretty much it. To most other fans it's a cool thing.

I actually coached for 3 seasons, but one of them was in an unofficial capacity.

Funny how stopping swimming and turning 21 seemed to coincide with gaining approximately 30 pounds. exactly 32 pounds.

Is that better?

I assure you, as someone who has spoken in front of a thousand people many times, I have no problem with speaking in front of a crowd.

I can also assure you that my grasp of the English language is more than adequate.

Thank you though for your concern, next time you feel like whipping out your grammar police badge, why not save us both the time and just...like...shove it up your ass.

Let's see; forerunner throws you a bone and you get all giddy. However, first you showed us just how hot under the skin you get when shown you write like 14 year old girls talk. I'm surprised they let someone with such a short fuse be a moderator. And, if as I expect, go ahead and doink me with some stupid sanction. I would imagine your fellow mods would see that I pointed out, although a bit overstated, grammatical idiocy. You are the one who brought the talk down to a personal level.

Good job moderating.

Giddy? The guy can understand context, an ability you seem to lack, and trust me friend, you are far from being "under my skin". Using like as a gap filler, as forerunner put it, would be "writing like a 14 year old girl speaks", using like as a preposition:

Main Entry: 4like
Function: preposition
Date: 13th century
1 a : having the characteristics of : similar to <his house is like a barn> <it's like when we were kids> b : typical of <was like him to do that> c : comparable to : approximating <costs something like fifty cents> 2 : in the manner of : similarly to <acts like a fool> 3 : as though there would be <looks like rain> 4 : such as <a subject like physics> 5 —used to form intensive or ironic phrases <fought like hell> <like fun he did> <laughed like anything>

is grammatically lazy at worst.

Quick, let Merriam Webster know they're propagating "grammatical idiocy"...

And for the record, you putting on your grammar police badge, a most noble cause that is definitely not "beyond obnoxious", is not in violation of the AUP and thus should not be met with any form of warning.

However, discussing moderators and/or moderation issues on the public forum is a violation of the AUP. Having said that, I'm not petty, you were just doing your due diligence as the self righteousness(if ultimately incorrect) grammar police. So let's just put this little unpleasantness behind us. I'll try my best to be a little less grammatically lazy and you...well you just be your awesome self guy, I doubt this place could go on without you.
