UMass and South Alabama face 10-year probation (attendance related)
Massachusetts and South Alabama were approved but must meet minimum football attendance requirements this season, while Texas State moves into the FBS with no restrictions.

Both UMass and South Alabama failed to satisfy the actual or paid 15,000 attendance requirement over a rolling two-year period for FBS schools. Their move to the FBS will be contingent upon having 15,000 in actual average attendance in the 2013 football season. If the requirement is not met, the schools will receive a notice of noncompliance and enter a 10-year probationary period.

Wait, they actually enforce that rule? Don't let them find out about the other teams in the MAC that have similar issues.

Wait, they have 10 years to come up to speed? If you don't do it in ten, you can't afford to belong. And even at 15,000 average, you really can not afford to belong.

The other teams in the MAC are already full FBS members, not trying to join. EMU would have issues joining FBS today.

It's a joke that the standard is not enforced, not even to QUALIFY for FBS. They don't make the standard even in their probationary period, then they get one extra year to make it, or else get probation for 10 years. Oooooh. Stiff penalty. SMH.

What about the rest of the MAC? I've seen their games on T.V., and I don't think many of those games have 15,000 in the stands.

I've seen plenty of games of schools in other conferences where the listed attendance is decent but actual showing is crappy. There might be more games like that in the MAC but there's also some very cold weather at the end of the year, harder to get a big crowd.

Besides, what about all the other sports? There are few fans for those teams but nobody cares. In any case it's the conference realignment that caused FCS teams to be picked by FBS conferences, by necessity. Were those conferences supposed to just pick a FCS team based on their attendance?

This is why the bigger conferences want a new division. Teams that have moved to FBS since the turn of the century.

Charlotte Est. 2013 FBS in 2015
Florida Atlantic Est. 2001 FBS in 2005
Florida International Est. 2002 FBS in 2005
Georgia State Est. 2010 FBS in 2013
South Alabama Est. 2009 FBS in 2012
South Florida Est. 1997 FBS in 2001
UTSA Est. 2011 FBS in 2012

Appalachian State FBS in 2014
Georgia Southern FBS in 2014
Massachusetts FBS in 2012
Middle Tennessee FBS in 2000
Old Dominion FBS in 2014
Western Kentucky FBS in 2008

Not sure if there are more. How many of these teams are actually deserving? South Florida, UTSA, App State, Georgia Southern, MTSU, and Western Kentucky.

The best thing that could happen to UMass and maybe the American would be this:

North: UConn, UMass, Temple, Army, Navy, Cincinnati, ECU
South: USF, UCF, Tulsa, Memphis, Tulane, Houston, SMU

Play on campus and they have no trouble with attendance if they playing that group of schools.

They will be playing on campus. It's my understanding that their stadium will hold 25,000 when the remodel is complete in 2014.

Maybe someone can confirm that.

That's actually a good question since we averaged 18k in 2011 and 16k in 2012.

I'm surprised USA fell that far after being well over 15000 in previous seasons.

Yeah, I just checked the NCAA website and they have down nearly 18.5K in 2011 and nearly 17K in 2012, so I don't see where South Alabama fails to meet the 15K requirement.

I bet they wish they had App State's attendance 26K in a stadium that only seats 24K.
