Yeah, 20 years was just a nice rounder number than 22 years. Though 20 years later would also work as the people that we had boycotted to support were already aiding the planning for a terrorist attack on our soil.

RE: olympic boycott
The U.S. will not do anything to dissolve the U.N. regardless if a Democrat or a Republican is in the White House. By leaving the U.N., the U.S. would let an emerging superpower China along with Russia and others to basically get away with everything. The U.S. serves as a counterbalance to the likes of Russia and China and we can argue all day about how effective or ineffective the U.N. is but it's an important tool for American foreign policy.

As for the Olympics, they are what they are: a corporate fest. The IOC cares about one thing and just one thing, what bid offers the more money, best venues, best infrastructure, etc. Otherwise, Beijing 2008 would've been Toronto 2008 (the runner up) if human rights was the main concern. Same with the World Cup, after Brazil next year Russia and Qatar will get the 2018 and 2022 bids and those two are notorious for violating human rights and in the case of Qatar financing terrorism. It's all about the money.

Punish Russia in other ways. Fans can skip Sochi, but athletes deserve to compete.

Agree with this whole-heartedly. Keep politics out.

thirded!

Soviets invaded Afganistan in 79? I think. The irony was us supplying Afghanis with weapons in the 80's who some turned into the Taliban. We know how that turned out.

RE: olympic boycott
Boycotting the Olympics would not solve anything in the long run. If you really want to stick it to Putin, win everything. Especially figure skating. They're going to get buried in figure skating.

olympic boycott
Not to mention beating the Russians in hockey by 5 or more goals per game would send a pretty strong message.
