Right again!

Macey was kind of an unfortunate case. He could have been sooooo much better, and he was already really good (great, in fact). He never worked all that hard and it finally caught up with him in the pros. If he had a work ethic like some of the other guys in our class, he could have had a long career in the league.

I think someone earlier asked about the QB that Wood ran off. Well, Willie Gonzalez got hurt his senior year at BU and didn't come back until the UConn game. Greg Maddox played as a freshman when Willie went down. Greg had some good moments and some WTF moments (See Northeastern 1996). Greg played in 1997, but I think quit in 1998 (after I left).

No doubt Macey was given a gift by God that could have been so much more. Still, he was one of the best WRs in JMU history.

Thanks! Greg Maddox was the QB I was thinking about...and it's very true he was hot and cold. He still holds the all-time JMU record for most passing yards in a game...388 yards on 47 attempts against Hofstra, and passed for 4,863 yards and 34 TDs in 3 years of play. Yet Wood in his brilliance wanted to move Greg to TE...which was really just an excuse to run him off...a move I still don't get.

I can't help but wonder if Greg had been available MM's first year, that we might have made a run in the playoffs. Against Troy I think MM was down to playing the water boy at QB.

RE: Consolidated Rankings
I remember we had an NC State transfer, Charles Berry that began '99 at QB for us. Was that the year we used everyone from 'Flip to Connelly?

Yes...'99 was MM's first year, and I think JMU went through 5 QBs. I can't even remember who really played in the playoffs against Troy, but our options at QB were very limited.

Didn't Clayton play QB during that stretch? I may have my years mixed up...

No, Clayton was a senior in HS in Georgia, leading his team to a state championship.

Mike Connelly (about the same size and skill set as Clayton) played some at QB...was lightning in a bottle until a couple big hits took him out.

okay, but wasn't there another season with similar QB situation where he did have to go in as the back ups back ups back up? After having been the punter?

Good chance I have all that wrong...

You're memory is right...Clayton did that the next season, playing as a true freshmen.

I remember Connolly just running all over UConn on Homecoming. That was a fun game.

That actually makes it even more incredible. So two seasons running we had how many QB's go out? 7, 8? That's some serious coaching right there.

lol...well, it was a circus at QB during those years...and some pretty tough moments for coaches and fans alike. But you could tell the team (and program) was getting better...and then Rascati fell in MM's lap and the rest is history.

I'm not saying Macey wasn't good. He was great, but he had so much more potential. Looking back, I probably could have worked harder in some areas than I did (God gave me size but strength and speed were something I had to build through hard work), but Macey was great without having to do much in the area of preparation. The lack of work ethic finally caught up with him in the league. If he had worked as hard at getting better as say Ed Perry, he would probably still be playing in the league.

Ultimately, I could be totally wrong about Macey; only Macey knows for sure. My opinion is just that, an opinion. An opinion based on my observations over the course of 4 years as a classmate and teammate of his.

I didn't sense you were being critical of Macey...just the opposite. I only watched him play, and you had a much closer perspective, and yet I think we are of the same opinion. We both agree he had a natural talent given to few athletes, and it's always a shame when the "promise" of that kind of talent isn't always fulfilled. Kinda always felt that way about Mickey Mantle. Sometimes it's because of a less than stellar work ethic...sometimes due to unforeseen injuries (like Gale Sayers). Still, Macey was a joy to watch play as a Duke.
