Yes, I was thinking about the whole speed issue as I was typing that. Not sure we have anybody who can simulate that in practice.

As for aTm, I just hope it's not an embarrassing blowout. If we're saying on the one hand that we don't have any way to simulate their speed in practice, but on the other hand that we somehow expect to be able to hang with them, I'd be really interested in how that could work.

No doubt, there are things that COULD be done. Just don't know whether we will do them or not.

Who cares if A$M is embarrassed when we blow them out? Oh, wait, maybe that's not what you meant.

Score was 44-31 when Bailiff's 11-3 Texas State team played there. I'd take that result now and be happy with it.

It is a matter of processing pursuit angles not necessarily replicating them. It is very hard to tackle someone if the two vectors fail to converge at a single point. In other words, don't be late to that point nor overshoot that point. More mature players have an easier time making the vectors converge. Having more mature players certainly helps.

Unless the score is 44-7 after 3 quarters and they give the dog a helmet

Pursuit angles are absolutely about maturity. At this level, IMO, it's about recognizing that you might have been the fastest guy on the team in high school and could take whatever angle you wanted... but now you're going against even faster guys, and you need to give them their due. Rarely are pursuit angles constant. A mature player will start at an angle that gives him the advantage no matter how fast the opponent is, and then ratchet it back if the guy isn't that fast or tries to lull him into a bad angle.... i.e. get out in front of the guy and make him beat you as opposed to playing from behind him and expecting to catch him.

Looks as though there is a new QB on the team wearing the #6 jersey. Anyone know who this is?

Good read. I'm excited about Jowan Davis, but barring injuries, I'm not sure that he plays this year because of the aforementioned depth.

A couple of quick notes from my distant observation.

1. Projection and S&C: somebody did a heck of a job scouting Luke Turner and someone else did a heck of a job getting him from about 210lbs last year to a rocked up 230. If he maintains his speed and gets bigger, he may have to go the Jeremy Eddington route...

2. Return of the H-back (a la James Casey) : I don't know how long it will take our Freshmen Tight Ends to be ready physically/mentally, but I really like the "return" of the Hback to our offense. It would have been nice to have moved Jeremy earlier in his career, but I think that we have a few good potential candidates in place after Jeremy graduates: Luke Turner @ 6-2/230, Derek Brown @ 6-3/225, and Reid Mitchell @ 6-2/240.

3. Growth spurt: anyone else notice that our boy Taylor McHargue grew up a bit? He went from 6-1/212 last year to 6-2.5/220 prior to fall camp. However, I'm more excited about his mental progress. I really think that volunteering at the Manning camp has had a significant factor. I hope that DJ, Billups, German, and Stehling can get some off season exposure and tutelage.

4. 2008 Redux offense: one very encouraging note from the first scrimmage was that the offense connected on all of their big plays. Taylor threw three tds including a 65 yard play to Donte Moore. I know that it is early, but I posit that this offense will average near 40pts per game.

5. Defense? No clue, but l think we will see a lot of young guys such as Lyons, Peterson, McGaskey, Canady, and both Pollards, play often and play well. Speaking of, anyone know if Trevor Caswell is still playing?

Yup, great depth at RB.. a lot more worrisome is the d-line, WR...

I think we're in good shape at WR, with Hull, Parks, Taylor, Moore, and Brown...

But DL, yeah, we're missing #'s at DT, and big ?'s about the quality of our DE depth.

Agreed.

I think we'll have a solid 1-2 punch with Taylor and Hull/Donte.

DL is really the only area, coming out of fall camp, that we will have potential issues with. Our safeties played much better down the stretch and we have some experience there now, so I am optimistic that they have turned the corner.

Big Ten No. 7 vs. C-USA

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Indiana vs. Rice

Top Three Other Options: 1) Minnesota, 2) Louisiana Tech, 3) UTEP

Why? It might be next to impossible for the Big Ten to fill all of its bowl slots, but Indiana would jump all over the invite if it can get to six wins. This would be the program's first bowl appearance wince the 2007 Insight Bowl loss to Oklahoma State, and it would be just the second since 1993. Rice isn't exactly local, but the Texas tie-in makes sense

I am a bit concerned at LB. Nwosu is not 100%, Radcliffe is solid but not an all-conference guy but other LB's are unproven. We are solid in secondary, ok at DE, but now vulnerable/soft up-the-middle. I don't see the 'sideline-to-sideline' guy who is going to keep Safeties from having to play-up and make tackles for 5-7 yd gains...that opens-up play action and vertical stretch routes on seams (recognizing we will be great outside hashmarks w/ our CB's)... That would be my gameplan if I'm A&M...Pound it up-the-gut and then play action off that with run/pass options between hashmarks for Johnny Football.

People also seem to be assuming we'll be solid at WR, but I'm not quite as confident. Besides Taylor, I don't see great *proven* 2nd-5th receiving options. Moore is fast, but his blocking has underwhelmed. Hull was injured all year last year, IIRC. We've lost 2 NFL-caliber TEs.. Hopefully guys will step up to dispel any questions but at this point, I'm worried about WRs/TEs.

My rebuttal for this statement is summed as Brown, Cella, and Parks. Just because they are unproven does not mean that they won't have a positive impact on the game. I have "heard" enough chatter about them to believe that they will play well. Furthermore, the offensive line was unproven heading into last year, but they excelled as the year went by.

As for Donte Moore's blocking being underwhelming, I would assert just the opposite. For a 170-180 WR, Moore's blocking has been exceptional on occasions. In fact, during the 2011 Rice Texas game, Moore was famously called out by a ref for dominating the defender. I would offer video proof, but alas I cannot find the video.

As for owl40's point about the LB's, I too am concerned. However, what we lack in experience, we make up for in size and speed. Hopefully, Cam is coaching up the underclass men.

RE: Fall Camp 2013
Radcliffe is about as much a sideline to sideline LB as we've had in a while. Runs/covers very well.

Nwosu is a tough dude. I think he'll be ready.

And we have lots of depth behind those two, although it is somewhat inexperienced (but aren't backups always?) the concern with our LBs (as always in our 4-2-5 system) is lack of size, but TCU has made it work with smaller guys.

As for WR. Moore is a proven blocker. His question mark is receiving production, he just hasn't done much catching the ball with multiple seasons as a starter already. Hull will be good once he shakes off the rust. Gautreaux and Kubiak are solid well-versed guys. Parks has a lot of potential as does Brown. I think we'll be OK there, but losing Lovett Gibson hurt as I think if things had panned out he'd be the #2 opposite Taylor right now.
