I thought this was interesting:

Quote:Bearcats' Tommy Tuberville gets look at new players
First practice teaches team the basics

Bearcats: First Day of Practice: University of Cincinnati football training camp at Sheakley Athletics Center and Nippert Stadium at the University of Cincinnati.

There were new faces aplenty at the first University of Cincinnati preseason football practice Monday, so much that new coach Tommy Tuberville almost seemed like an old hand.

Big-name Notre Dame transfers Gunner Kiel (quarterback) and Jake Golic (tight end) each went through his first UC practice. Kiel, a sophomore and formerly the nation’s No. 1-rated prep quarterback, must sit out 2013 and will have three years eligibility left.

Golic, a fifth-year senior, can play right away and is among several tight end candidates. Golic is the son of Mike Golic, the former NFL and Notre Dame defensive tackle and co-host of ESPN radio show “Mike and Mike.”

There also was Lindsay Crook, the former Australian pro rugby player recently profiled by The Enquirer. Crook, a freshman linebacker, suffered a leg injury late in practice and was to be examined Monday night.

“I mainly look at the new guys for the first few days,” Tuberville said. “We’ll start with the basics, then we’ll have our first scrimmage Saturday or Sunday.”

There were several other transfers among the new faces. Plus, with a Reds off-day coinciding with the first Bearcats practice, Tuberville was surrounded by all of the major Cincinnati media outlets once practice ended.

“Lot of folks here,” Tuberville said, squinting against the late afternoon sun. “We’re just trying to get everybody going and make it ‘til Friday, where we get to Higher Ground and have full pads on.”

NOTEWORTHY: More than 100 Bearcats participated in the workout, which was split between the Sheakley Athletic Center and Nippert Stadium on campus.

• Senior quarterbacks Brendon Kay and Munchie Legaux, listed Nos. 1 and 1A on the depth chart, took turns running the No. 1 offense. Each had his moments, but Tuberville will not announce a starter until about 10 days into camp.

• Linebacker Eric Wilson joined UC Monday as a transfer from Northwestern. Wilson will sit out the 2013 season and have three years of eligibility remaining.

True freshman Chris Burton has been moved from tight end to defensive end.

This is interesting. So both Chris Burton and Korey Cunningham have been moved to DE. We certainly didn't expect all 4 TEs from this class to stay there. Seems like a good move to get some athletic guys on the DL. I like the focus this staff has put on the DL especially considering we have 5 DL committed for the 2014 class.

Look at the roster and see how freaking thin we are at DE. Likely won't be the last one to move there.

Lets see...

2 first year JUCOs
Dwight Jackson
A true Frosh
Ad 2 Frosh TEs switching positions.

Egads.

Tubs likes tall DE's. How did we steal Burton away from NC State?
Did Auburn offer Cunningham late in the process? Rivals showed him with
an offer there.

Also Elijah Shuler is back. And I thought Chad West was playing DE as well. What happened to Chad Hannah? I had high hopes for him but I don't see him on the roster now that I look.

Not sure on Cunningham. Maybe wasn't a "commitable" offer or something as I'd assume he'd jump to play for his home state team. When we signed him, I wondered if the plan would be to bulk him up and make him a LT. He's a big dude.

Burton seems like a great grab. I wonder with the coaching change if he just didn't feel comfortable with NC State's new staff. Had a nice offer list.

For some reason they all got switched on this latest roster to DL. I take that to mean they will split time on the interior. Might just be semantics.

Yeah, Silverberry is sticking at DE for sure. That use of DL is more due to the 3-4 option that they're attempting to implement that I talked about earlier in this thread.

I'm kind of surprised Dwight Jackson is listed at DE. I would've thought he'd be brought back as a LB for sure.

Me too. Although he looked a bit bigger in the spring game then where he was a couple years ago as a true frosh. I think the kid has a lot of talent and might be a good option at OLB given our depth issues.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have an idea when the first depth chart will come out?

Yeah same here. I bet he is a LB. He was a good special teams guy in 2011, so is Mason and Hyland.

Hannah left the team due to injuries. No idea when it happened or what the injury was/is but he is no longer with the program
