Looks like there is a "personal assistant" involved in the matter. Golly gee how did this escape A$M's attention? Is this the A$M hired Handler that supposedly watches him?

No it is a friend of Johnny's. Don't know how he got the job and what the job description was (unless he is over 21 and is supposed to hold Johnny's booze when they are in clubs and the TABC shows up).

It's not an excuse for Manziel to ignore the rules, but it's sad that so many people use players like Manziel as cash cows. An example from the article linked above:

Quote:The value of Manziel is clear in the memorabilia and appearance market: Independent merchandiser Aggieland Outfitters recently auctioned off six helmets signed by Manziel and Texas A&M's other Heisman Trophy winner, John David Crow, for $81,000.

If Manziel can't sell his own autograph, should a retail shop be allowed to profit so much from his autograph? Too bad the NCAA isn't interested in protecting student athletes from exploitation.

This sounds like Reggie Bush Part II.

I'm surprised more isn't also being made out of this statement, as noted in the third paragraph of the article from above:

Quote:Besides saying Manziel would no longer sign autographs for free, Fitch, according to the broker, also said he could provide other current standout college football players for autograph sessions in which the players would need to be paid.

In particular, there are other current standouts that would need to be paid for autograph sessions? And Fitch, in particular, is fronting for said college football players, despite being someone that is supposed to be watching out for Manziel and was his friend?

This has the potential to get huge, but no one will likely speak to the NCAA unless they are a current student-athlete.

That's a sleazy business, but nobody forced Manziel to enable it.

I think the legal term for this is "Agent" and you know the players involved aren't doing it without some form of compensation.

RE: NCAA Investigating Manziel
Solely from the perspective of increasing exposure for Rice football, it's better that Manziel does play in the opener. While beating A&M is unlikely, Rice's chances of winning are about the same whether Manziel plays or not. A&M's gameplan is likely to try and run the ball down our throats first and foremost. They have a strong stable of RBs and a great O-line, so I am thinking they will try to keep the passing as simple and vanilla as possible, saving the surprises for their key clashes in the following games.

While Manziel might ultimately be suspended, it won't be before the A&M-Alabama game. Too much money riding on that, and the NCAA will take its time to "investigate" all these allegations...

ESPN reporting that on one occasion Johnny was paid $7500 for autographs.

There is very little in Manziel's life that suggests exploitation.

Just to clarify my comment, part of the defense of Manziel seems to be that the autograph dealers shouldn't be able to exploit him by keeping all of the money from his autograph. That ignores the fact that he doesn't have to do autographs and especially not in bulk.

I blame the NCAA for a lot of things, but this is NOT one of them. This new ESPN report cites a different autograph broker who says Manziel's buddy, Nate Fitch, was not involved in his deal, and he has Manziel on video signing and saying, "you never did a signing with me." In other words, this is all Johnny Douchebag. It's not like he doesn't have a ton of other examples of bad behavior. These signings are not an outlier; they 100% fit his profile.

I didn't mean to imply that I thought Manziel should be paid for the autographs or that he didn't bring this on himself. I was using him as an example of how people profit shamelessly from the successes of student athletes.

As this escalates, I just hope that he's had the good sense to pay the proper estimated federal and state withholding taxes. That's always how the man brings you down!
