RE: your ideal conference?
I have thought for as long as I have thought about such things that a 9 team conference is ideal. It allows for equal home and away games in all sports, including football, and it is a full round robin, which I think is supremely preferred. 9 is a small enough number to keep it regional but large enough to cover a substantial area for exposure. It also allows many opportunities for OOC games that are critical to each program.
For example, in a 9 team conference, Duke could be in conference with other elite private schools, like Notre Dame, Northwestern, Vandy, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Boston College, Miami, and someone else (Georgetown, Baylor, Navy, etc.). Duke would have 8 football games against those opponents, so they could still play UNC, UVA, and whoever else they consider important to their rivalries and purposes. There are a lot of great possibilities that would allow cultural fit to reign supreme. Here are a few at the top that are intriguing:
PAC - Washington, Oregon, Cal, Stanford, USC, UCLA, Arizona, Utah, Colorado
SEC - Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina
Big 10 - Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan
Big East - Ohio State, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers, West Virginia
Elite - Notre Dame, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Miami, Duke, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Boston College, Baylor
ACC - Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Auburn, Georgia Tech, FSU, Clemson, NC State, Texas Tech
Mid-American - Kansas State, Iowa State, Purdue, Louisville, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, UConn, Cincinnati
MWC - Washington State, Oregon State, Arizona State, San Diego State, UNLV, Hawaii, Utah State, Colorado State, New Mexico
I may have accidentally missed a team, so apologies, but you get the idea. I know there is initial drama, like seeing Ohio State with more eastern teams. Remember, though, that they have 4 OOC games in this setup. They can still play Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois every year if they want to. Same idea for everybody else. Notre Dame can still play USC, Stanford, and Navy every year.
Well, there is my ideal.
