Men's soccer schedule
So I was checking out this year's men's soccer schedule today and while I was happy to see so many home games this season in the beautiful university park (13 of 19 games), there isn't a really big name team scheduled this year compared to last year's epic home win over number 1 UNC. I think we are definitely a soccer school on the rise. Was hoping to see a top 10 school or 2. Still excited for the season though :)

Yea, but who knows where team no X will be ranked by the time we play them. Or is there simply no "name" team scheduled?

JMU has been a fairly good soccer school since the late 80's.

Yeah, not really til the 90's. We didn't make the NCAA tournament once in the 80's. But from 92-96 we were pretty awesome. 2011 was the first time we made the tournament since like 05 or something. But I think with the new stadium and more recognition of the program, we actually could make some serious runs in the tourny. that's what I meant for soccer school on the rise...I meant bringing it on a national level that the majority of schools take note of.

RE: Men's soccer schedule
The men's soccer team is a program on the decline. From 90-00 the Men's Soccer Team had the sixth highest winning percentage in Men's Division 1 soccer in the country and was the only team in the Top-6 to not win a national title. A lot has to do with the fact that Coach Kilmer (I mean Martin) is grandfathered in and won't leave his post due to him having the highest winning percentage amongst all active Div. 1 coaches.

Well, I don't know what exactly "soccer" schools mean. St. louis, 10 national titles, UVA, 6 and Indiana 8. UCLA, 4. Also, much of the ACC has historically been very good. These are some of the more storied soccer schools in the U.S. I have left some more out, but certainly JMU could play UVA in soccer a lot more, creighton or st. louis would be pretty easy too.

I thought he meant schools where soccer is viewed as a legit sport, with fan support making it one of the best attended. If that's the case, then the answer is absolutely. The best examples are southern California schools, like UCSB, UCLA or USD. A few years ago the Gauchos drew over 14k for a game against UCLA. Other schools like Creighton usually sell out their 7k (?) stadium.
And like you mentioned, select other schools like Indiana and St. Louis and most of the ACC (esp. Maryland) have attendance in the several thousand range. Not coincidentally, attendance is highest at schools that are traditional powers in the sport and which lack football.

I was thinking he meant where soccer is their main sport (or most famous, i.e. they're not known athletically for being a powerhouse in the other sports such as football, basketball, baseball or hockey), if that's the case then Akron, Portland, St. Louis come to mind.

Yeah, I know JMU had some great runs in the past. But I believe we are investing in our soccer program, and I believe it's slowly coming back. If you haven't been to UPark, it's a pretty cool soccer experience. Would love to have men's lacrosse come back. would be great to see it there!

Something can't "come back" if it never was.

UC Santa Barbara is THE soccer school. No question.
