2013 OOC schedules for possible JMU conferences
Just some information
here are the non conference home games against the Big 5 conferences plus i'm throwing in the AAC as that is the "local" conference where we could possibly get a home game against
Sun Belt
Kentucky at Western Kentucky. (that's it..and WKU is leaving for CUSA)
MAC
Vanderbilt at UMass (no doubt helped by playing at Gillette)
UConn at Buffalo
Cincinnati at Miami (long time rival)
CUSA
Va Tech at East Carolina
Central Florida at FIU
Memphis at Middle Tennessee St
Kansas at Rice
Houston at Rice (rivalry game)
Iowa St at Tulsa
Oklahoma St at UT San Antonoio

That WKU-UK series was a pretty good get for the Hilltoppers. They got a 4 game series; 2 at Lexington and two "home" games in Nashville. Nashville is about an hour from WKU.
Given that Western Kentucky's stadium only seats 23k, I don't think it was realistic to get an on campus game w/ an SEC team. If coordinated well, a home game one hour away is a very good alternative.

RE: 2013 OOC schedules for possible JMU conferences
Arkansas State has signed home and home deals with Miami and Missouri in the last 6 months and there will be more. It has to do with priorities, leadership and whether you runs things in a manner that allows you to schedule those games instead of guarantee games.
Also, those are some questionable "Big" opponents when you include Memphis, UCF, Houston, Kansas and Iowa State.
We also are wrapping up a series with Memphis this year in which the last two years were played at our place if you are counting Memphis.

Props to your leadership and AD for being able to swing those. Bet you probably never thought you would see the U in Jonesboro.

Hey Crump,
I was looking at your stadium and noticed there is quite a bit of bowled/ hillside seating ( in the four corners) that could be used if necessary.
The record crowd at your place is 31-32k. I would think both of the above mentioned games would exceed that number. Do you think ASU will utilize that grassy area for overflow seating? Would they charge for it?

I doubt we would get anyone of consequence to play a home and home against us until we expand the stadium on the other side. Though if (once) we get to over 40k seats having a marquee game every year to drive season ticket sales will be a must.

The picture is a little bit old but the seating has not changed. It holds just over 30K in the stands and the small suites in one of the endzones. We would likely utilize the space in the grass if needed like ULL has done in the past. We are starting constructionin the spring of a new practice facility on the end with the seating and it will replace the seats with an open "terrace" with concessions, loge seating and club seats.
We also plan to upgrade the pressbox but that is after the other improvements.
The plan is to generate more revenue with new seating instead of eliminating the seating in the endzone like Malzahn planned. Our new AD is really on top of things.

Absolutely correct. In the first years after we moved up, nobody would come to our place for a straight home and home and even Memphis demanded 3 for 1 deals. TCU came once, Ole Miss once and soon after we started getting SMU, Army, USM and Memphis for straight home and home contracts.
It takes time.

looks really nice.
we've got all that in place now except the indoor facility, which there is discussion of converting our old basketball arena into an indoor facility when the new hoops building is built in a few years.
one thing I don't like about the old stadiums though is all the dead space in the corners. lets all the sound escape and is not as intimidating an environment. when our other side is done it will will have a nice enclosed feel that should trap a lot of noise on the field.

It actually traps the sound very well since the field is sunken. An ESPN sideline reporter commented a few years back at how much louder it was than she thought it would be. I was late for a weeknight game last year and couldn't hear a peep but when I entered the stadium it was deafening. When we built the football complex and video board in the endzone 12 or so years ago it helped a lot.

With regards to this, what has been done to prevent a river of water from entering the stadium like it did last year during that heavy rain(this didn't happen during a game). What would we do if that sort of thing did happen during a game? Fans who parked in the CONVO lot would not be able to get to their cars without going over the interstate via Port Republic Rd. The tunnel was totally full of rushing water. Has this been addressed?

One area where I think Bourne has done a good job is at away game scheduling. UNC, Maryland, VT, WVU, etc. are all games that JMU alums can get to in car. Whether we move up or not, I hope that continues. I keep hearing about these big 5 conferences breaking off but good luck filling a schedule without tier 2 (or whatever you want to call them) conferences.

Yes, this is what I was talking about. Has anything been done to prevent this in the future?

I don't know if it would prevent this, but they did put in a retaining wall on the end zone bleachers. I am not an engineer by any means but I doubt it would have stopped that.

Wow! Never saw this. We had an infamous issue with water when new turf was installed a few years back but new pipes solved it.
