Where can I get good Cajun food in northern Louisiana?
So Mrs Appfan and I are driving from Virginia to Dallas in a few weeks and will plowing along I20 in north Louisiana around dinner time. Is there any suggestions from you Louisiana guys on good place to stop not too far from 20 where we can stop for some good Cajun food between Monroe and Shreveport? I know it's not New Orleans or Lafayette but beggars can't be choosers as they say. That will have to wait until 2014 football season.

I'd also take suggestions on dishes we should try. We'll eat just about anything and like it spicy. I've had Cajun food (such that one can get on the east coast anyway) but never the "real thing" if you will.

Z can probably help you out, he spends too much time in N Louisiana, and loves to eat.

I actually ate some decent seafood in RustOn a few years back at a LTU vs UL game right in town about a mile from I 20. Can't say it was Cajun food, but good seafood anyway. Cannot remember the name, but seems to have a big following.

I know it's not what you want to hear, but you still won't have the "real thing" in North Louisiana. You'll have to head south for such Cajun goodness.

The term Cajun comes from the word Acadian, it used to be a slurr for Acadians, people called them Cajuns. Think about it for a second, say Acadians fast back to back to back and you'll start to hear "cajuns". The Acadians migrated to South Louisiana and settled in an area of south central Louisiana which came to be known as Acadiana. Lafayette is often referred to as "the Heart of Acadiana" because we are right in the middle of it. This is the reason we like to brag about our food being the best, because quite simply put... IT IS! Haha. This is also the reason we say food you get in New Orleans isn't Cajun food either, it's more Creole food... which is also very good and spicy... just has different flavors.

So take a detour and head south for some real Cajun food sha! You won't be sorry you did. Come, stay awhile, eat alot, drink a few, dance a bunch, and make some friends. You'll love it here.

Shreveport used to have a Don's seafood and steakhouse. it's been closed for a couple of years but the original is still going strong after more than 70 years in downtown Lafayette.

That would have been a sure bet.

I live in Bossier City, maybe Ralphs and Cacoos in Bossier City? It would be Old Minden Exit in Bossier City

Seawolf what's your connection to Alaska? Oil field related? Just curious. I'm a hockey fan too. I follow the Red Wings and Black Hawks in the NHL.

Cypress Inn in Monroe sits on a beautiful bayou with cypress trees with lots of Spanish moss. They have pretty darn good Cajun food and catfish, etc. great atmosphere as well. Also not far at all from ULM campus if you want to check it out. Very nice sitting outside. The Mohawk Tavern in Monroe is also good, but for atmosphere and food I'd go to Cypress Inn.

I always liked Blind Tiger in downtown Shreveport. Gumbo to Go in Bossier is nothing to look at but make some of the best boudin balls I've had anywhere.

Best boudin balls I've had are in Scott, LA. Billy's boudin is some of the best and their boudin balls with pepperjack cheese in the middle is to die for. BTW, Scott, LA is now the official Boudin Capital of the World. They sell more boudin in that town than anywhere else. You have Billy's, Don's and Best Stop within a mile of each other.

I've had the ones at the Stop and they are delightful. In fact have some Stop boudin in my freezer.

Juice, my grandmother called her people Acadians because they were actually from Arcadia. She was offended when someone called her Cajun because her family were fair skinned people that settled in Jeff Davis Parish, raised cattle and farmed.

My grandfather's family settled in St Martin parish and he was dark skinned. His family lived off the basin and hunted. He had no problems with being called Cajun.

It was clear to me growing up that all Acadians do not consider themselves Cajun, but a number of them actually came from the providence of Arcadia and spoke french with a few suttle differences.

I am originally from Lafayette, lived there for 29 years, and my family, friends live in Lafayette. It is very hard to find Boudin and Cracklins in North Louisiana. The only place I know of is Cormier's that has it except the grocery store. They do have crawfish during the season, but has nothing on Lafayette and the surrounding area.

I loved Don's when I lived in Lafayette of course I loved Alesi's also. Good independent restaurants are hard to find anywhere now and those were two of the best in south Louisiana.

Also not far at all from ULM campus if you want to check it out. Very nice sitting outside. The Mohawk Tavern in Monroe is also good, but for atmosphere and food I'd go to Cypress Inn.

I've never had a meal at Cypress Inn that was anything short of excellent!

Agreed BR Transplant. I think for food and atmosphere that is his best option.
