I'll bet if Harding calls to ask about a game, the secretary says "Shields is in Poland recruiting, and I'll give him your message when he returns in two months." Probably couldn't pour the Trojans on Harding after the last time we played them. I don't think Dickie Nutt and ASU ever played Newell and UAM again after they beat him in an exhibition game.

It works both ways. Tennessee hasn't played us since Platt beat them. We beat the heck out of SIU a few years ago and I don't see that regional rival volunteering to play us again. We won at Minnesota and Northwestern and those Big 12 teams haven't been on our schedule since. No coach likes to lose to what they see as a "lesser" opponent.

There is a lot of posturing in scheduling. Perception is everything.

Our lack on name recognition hurts us. But other coaches know the hard-nosed style that Shields plays, and if they think he has talent they will avoid him if they can. Obviously schools like Florida and Memphis aren't shaking in their boots about playing UALR. We'll see about Oklahoma- but realistically they will have more talent and not many coaches will out coach Lon Kruger. Still, I think that one will be interesting.

Talented no-name schools are the ones coaches avoid. They can play Wichita State now and if they lose there is no shame. Or VCU, etc. But an "at" school is another proposition entirely.

If Shields doesn't have any agent, he should consider hiring Mickey.

He is right. Everyone in the game knows Steve now, and they know the style his teams play. They saw James White as a freshman and his talent level is not hard to figure out, and they know we have a 6-10 kid who at one time could really shoot the 3. Add that onto our normal physical style of play, and they just say, "Let me get back with you," or something.

Any coach is thinking, "If I happen to catch them on a hot night, what are the chances I will still win?" Oklahoma, Florida, etc., assume they will win even then. Some of the others do not.

That is my only explanation for our problems scheduling this year. Our coaches have shown they want to schedule the most solid schedule they can, while avoiding "body bag" games. Unfortunately, we have several body bag games this year- although at the moment I'm not counting us out against OU. However, winning on the road against teams like Southern, Tulsa, or MTSU would certainly prove to me that we have what it takes to win the Sun Belt.

Well, when you add the Texas State and USA road games that are not yet listed and count the 3 Canada games then yes it is 20 road games.

Well, we should be ready for the 200 or so that will back UNO arena. Actually, if Pappy is right about USA, they could bring a sizeable contingent to New Orleans. Same for ULL. Just won't be more than a handful of UALR fans.

Maybe we could go to NO and support the Lady Trojans. As it stands now we are planning to make the trip partially because the wife once lived and worked in NO and has not been back in many years. Plus, I would like a tour of the city since Katrina.
