102.1 The Game to undergo format change
102.1 The Game has been bought out and will feature local music. They will still carry Nationals and Redskins games but the entire staff minus two will get the axe.

Although I think local radio is underwhelming this is not a great development.

ESPN94.1 has a great partnership with ODU but we only get the scripted/paid for version of the content.

Your thoughts?

RE: 102.1 The Game to undergo format change
If there's a market for a second sports talk station (which I'm dubious about myself), another one will take its place soon enough.

I wish 90s-era One on One Sports were still around; they seemed to have a lot more personality than the ESPN/Fox suit-approved talkers.

Didn't listen to them anyway, so it will be no impact to me. If they are getting the axe, they obviously didn't have enough of the market anyway. Now if we can just get someone to replace Cattles on 94.1, maybe we can have some decent local sports radio in the 757.

Enjoyed listening to dp and rome every day. Will miss them. The local stuff sucked. Johnny d was entertaining but when he moved to the am slot I never listened to him. Merril was boring.

Finally getting Rome off my dial. If you're not an every day listener, you'd be lost trying to keep up with his "inside jokes" or whatever that garbage of a show is suppose to be. They should have just swallowed their pride and hired the fat man. Love him or hate him, people would have tuned in for a while just to see what he would say

His advertisers and his ardent followers would have tuned in, but that's about it as far as consistent listeners. Trainwreck Radio doesn't have much of a shelf life. And his shtick isn't even that entertaining by trainwreck standards. But there's some AM station in the sticks that'll give him a live mic because their ratings are in competition with dead air and they have nothing to lose.

That and the no-compete clause just now expired.

RE: 102.1 The Game to undergo format change
Before 94.1 went with ESPN they used to carry alot of shows (maybe from 1 on 1 sports, not sure) that were entertaining as hell. Remember the fat lady who would "blow you up" if you said "how are you doing?". She thought it was a waste of time. I miss some of those personalities. I agree, ESPN is way to corporate. I want some color!!

I like Johnny D and I think he brings something to the airwaves. Wish there was a place to get him on the air at 94.1

Colin is Cowherd is an arrogant know-it-all who doesn't.
Jim Rome is just too esoteric for me.
I really like Rasillo and Van Pelt.
Dan Patrick is entertaining

Here in metro Richmond we have two top notch Sports Radio stations and 3 great local sports guys
Big Al is entertaining and informative.
Greg Burton and Wes McElroy are both superior sports journalists.

I must sheepishly confess to being a "little rich boy with a cell phone" regular on the Fabulous Sports Babe while on the road in the early '90s. I miss that show.

Anybody remember 'Out of Bounds" with James Washington? That was by far my favorite morning drive radio program.

SVP and Rasillo are becoming my favorite. Dan Patrick is good. Mike and Mike are OK but I prefer the Steven Czaban show. Everything else stinks.

Ratings don't lie, folks. If you enjoyed 102.1 The Game, you were in the minority. That's not to say you are wrong for enjoying it, just saying this move was completely foreseeable...I called it six months ago that they'd be done by football season. For better or worse, and even with the flaws, Cattles absolutely destroyed them by the numbers.

So I'll say this once more, because I really don't think people take it to heart: If you want 94.1 to feel more like a flagship station, take action. Call in to the show, force their hand, write to Cattles and Shomby. You're the customer--tell them what you want, within reason, of course.

102.1 is now music and 1490AM still continues with sports. I was listening at lunch time, I'm not sure if the local guys are still on.

RE: 102.1 The Game to undergo format change
Based on the original Pilot story, they're going to stick with sports on 1490 at least for now. AM isn't really a good band for music unless it's the kind that doesn't benefit greatly from stereo, so unless they have plans for an oldies/gospel station, it stands a better chance of maintaining so long as the ratings justify it. The kicker is how powerful the signal is. I can't say that I've listened to 1490 before, so I haven't a clue as to its reach.

Side note. I dig the new format. They're playing some good tunes. Not as cookie cutter as our other stations.

The ownership hinted at a Coast-like format, so if that holds, I may have to give them a listen. I'm an XM hardcore, but it was the death of the Coast that was one of the final factors in pushing me to satellite.

I do agree. I listened for a a bit this morning and liked what they were playing. It is different from our other local fare.
